I loved living in Heritage Hill when I lived in Grand Rapids. If I were to move back to MI, I would live in Heritage or Cherry Hill in a heartbeat.
I'm not really sure what "reasonable 1-bedroom rates" are for you and I'm afraid I can't weigh in too heavily on that matter since, after living in places outside of MI for the past 3 years, my idea of a "reasonable rate" is probably very different from most other people living in the area.
I like Heritage Hill, I'm looking at some stuff there. Just as far as reasonable, I wouldn't pay more than about $600 a month give or take. I'm unfortunately still a poor college kid. Luckily apartments in GR (and Michigan for that matter) are probably more affordable than those in other areas... hmm.
I doubt you'll want to live out as far as I am (but soon moving from, thank god) but do NOT even remotely consider Woodfield Apartments. Just throwing that out there.
There's a couple apartments for rent on Washington SE, which is a fifteen minute walk to the downtown campus. It run parallel (one street over) to Fulton and is close to Lafayette. VERY quiet, nice neighborhood.
My friend lived in The Globe apartments, and it was awesome. An amazing building, not too bad as far as rent goes, and you can walk almost anywhere in the arena district.
