No to www!

Man, guys. Do any of you type out "www." in front of a URL when you go to the site? 'Cos you really shouldn't! It's a waste of time and makes the URL longer than necessary. I just went through my sites adding a mod_rewrite or whatever so that anybody who tries going to www.slimemansion.com or whatever has the URL secretly switch on them to ( Read more... )

I have like twice in the past half year, only because my university's site is a cuntwaffle and wouldn't let me unless I added the www. =[

I still do it out of habit. Been doing it for about 10 years now. >_> I also have a few pages that I visit that you have to type www or it sends me to yahoo! search. Ick.

Some countries have a "closed" internet to save on connection fees and require that you type "www" to access sites from other countries as it uses a different protocol (eg, going through a satellite connection to access a site in America versus keeping the connection in your home country).

1Think of the URL like a map. This part tells the system what method to access the URL with. Common methods include http (hyper text transfer protocol resources), https (HTTP over SSL), ftp (file transfer protocol), and gopher (Gopher protocol, <3).
2www (world wide web) helps determine which host or server to access. (In a server cluster or network or whathaveyou www2 will load to a different server than www3 or www). Many servers today will just redirect without www to the default directory on the server.
3URI schema allows for 64 sub domains in a URL each 128 characters long. Depending on how your .HTACCESS file is configured these can redirect to different servers or folders or even other domains! Gasp!

The Internet allows us to access information from remote servers regardless of their location; I can make free phone calls using Skype and VoIP to Russia, ( ... )

That's interesting! :o Where are you getting this from? I would like to read more. :o

What about sites on subdomains? Like, say if I wanted to go to... cascadia.verunne.net--www.cascadia.verunne.net doesn't exist, so if I was in some developing African nation, would sites like that just not be accessable to me, period?
