Like A Slutty Greek Tragedy

I've found myself thinking about Cat Marnell lately. It wasn't my intention, really. I mean, I have written about her before, but I kind of assumed that was it. Anyway, I read a lot of online beauty writing. Like a lot, a lot. So it turned out that I'd actually been reading her beauty writing for possibly ever. I never put two and two together, ( Read more... )

She is obnoxious as fuck, but it seems really intensely like a defensive, self-sabotaging mechanism. She drives me kind of nuts (see my last post on her), but I kind of hope she unfucks her life not only because it would be better if she were happier, but because she can write pretty damn well when she bothers.

The voyeuristic boner people have for "that girl who's a little psycho, but you know, in the entertaining self-destructive way not the way that spills over onto my life" is gross, though -
This. So much this. Watching someone harm themself from the comfort of distance is just skeevy

I have no idea who this person is, but the Joan Crawford quote is fantastic.

Like I said mostly just a really messed up beauty writer, who got me thinking about larger things while in the shower. (Fact: almost all of my writing comes from the bathroom. Only some of it's poop jokes, though.)

I love the Crawford quote so much. I know that feeling.

Also Marilyn had endometriosis, and I'm pretty sure most people would have thought she was faking the pain etc.

But of course. But they were happy to give her more tranquilizers to be all quiet.

I wanted to slap someone recently on FB who posted a Marilyn Monroe quote then said "I like the picture and quote not necessarily the cheating lies stuff - thankfully I have been very fortunate in my relationships."

Smug asshole is smug.

This is what Amy Winehouse's producer said about writing the song "Rehab":

"And she was like, 'He tried to make me go to rehab and I was like, "Pfft, no no no"'. And the first thing I was like, 'ding ding ding ding ding'. Like, I mean I'm supposed to be like, 'How was that for you?' and all I'm like is, 'We've got to go back to the studio.'"

And I'm like, Mark Ronson, have you considered the possibility that you are a terrible person?

If Winehouse's music crew had put as much effort getting her into rehab as they did making that song a hit, she might still be alive. Everyone around her was more interested in making money than in helping her. It's so gross.

It's weird. Someone like this, or Marilyn, or Amy Winehouse, or hundreds like them ... it seems like just about everyone has an excuse for voyeur-izing them (is there a better word for that?):
  • Some men are all "Mmmm, I bet she'd be a riot in the sack";
  • Other men would be "Awww, she just needs a nice guy to take care of her ... but I bet also she'd be a riot in the sack!";
  • Some women would be "There but for the grace of God...";
  • Other women are happy to have some to "tut-tut" about;
  • Some people would see her almost as a role model, sadly.
Anyhow. Yes, lots of gross generalizations; mea culpa. But I think you get the idea; so many people can project something onto her, they connect, or at least think they do, in some weird parasitic way, and they cling on like remoras until the celeb in question dies or disappears or joins a church or a cult or in some other way stops "exhibiting" (in the "exhibitionist" sense of the word). And yes, it is creepy, and yes, it is weird/interesting/fucked up that this happens with women "trainwrecks" but ( ... )

That's a really good breakdown of the people who love following women like that. Also, I like the remora thing.

Honestly, wrt Marnell, I just hope she eventually becomes happier. And I'd also like more beauty writing, but that's purely selfish.

When my Nigel pointed out that she drank heavily and had a drug habit, I think halfway expecting me to be scandalised about it, I said, "Phft, a blues singer with a drug and alcohol habit. I never heard of such a thing!"

/puts on "Spoonful Blues" by Charlie Patton

I don't know what that makes me. Not a celebrity vulture, probably.

My goodness, what would a fine, upstanding bluesman like, oh, Leadbelly say about such a thing?
