I recall thinking, back when Arlen Specter switched parties, that having 60 Democratic votes (nominal or otherwise) in the Senate would be a bad thing, because it would encourage unrealistic expectations among liberal voters, it would also encourage Democrats in Congress to overreach, which would in turn rile up the Republican base.
