I have been really into the paranormal since I was very young but never got into it much. My family is Catholic and really frowned upon thinking about it or researching into the unknown. Over the past few years my interest has been very much peaked in the paranormal. My husband is also interested as well, (since he started watching Ghost Adventures ( Read more... )

Any contact with demons and other traveling things can make them likely to follow you. Contact with ghosts...not so much. They're usually stuck where you find them. I wanted to be a parapsychologist for a number of years but finally gave up on the idea, because I finally decided that meddling in such things can bring danger and might not be the wisest career path.

Researching is a great deal safer, though in very rare cases a demon or related um, "item" may sense you thinking about them and be intrigued to investigate you. But like I said, that is very rare, especially if you're not the type to project your thoughts. And it's also good to know more about them for other reasons (defense measures, ways to ward them off, telltale signs of demons, things that will attract them that you should avoid, etc.) which definitely outweigh the tiny chance of any danger, if you ask me. Knowledge is always power.

Thank you, maybe a little research is in order now, lol. Parapsychologist, wow, what an interesting career that would have been, though like you said, dangerous.

Not really the same thing, demons would be part of the occult I guess. Researching hauntings and trying to find out what causes them doesn't cause anything nasty to come into your home.

as the person below has commented, a lot of what seems like hauntings can be explained by other stuff, and you can learn about that and not worry about anything weird happening. I personally think even ghosts that can't be explained scientifically often are just residual energy left over, not an actual spirit, so not something to really worry about either. I think it is pretty rare that you get an actual malevolent spirit. I belong to a really old paranormal society in England, our chairman did a lot of research on whether anyone had actually been killed by a ghost, and he couldn't find any cases at all where that happened. Just one where someone got shot because the person who shot them thought they were a ghost (yeah, I know...).

I think the famous Bell Witch case from here in America is the only recorded case in the world of a ghost killing a person and it's open for a great deal of debate.

I don't think it counts as "researching" if you don't have a thorough background in actual science so that you can realize a lot of what you think might be paranormal is actually pretty normal stuff.

No, you can research anything, from fairy tales to French cooking, and science needn't enter into it, unless that's what you choose to research. In this case, the OP's probably mostly interested in folklore and religious writings, which are both valid things to study. Most (all?) apparent paranormal incidents involve human psychology too. Snopes-style debunking barely scratches the surface.

Choosing to use a ouija board, or calling any spirits or demons present to manifest seems ill-advised, but I don't think you can do harm by reading about a topic, unless doing so brings on negative emotions, and thus makes you more vulnerable to any paranormal nasties that might be around.

I don't think it's possible. I'm fascinated by paranormal shows. I watch A Haunting, Ghost Adventures, Ghost Hunters, Haunted History, and other shows religiously. Nothing bad has happened to me.

Usually people who experience paranormal things are sensitive to begin with, or openly invite trouble in, like playing one man hide and seek, using a ouija board, that sort of thing.

Usually people who experience paranormal things are sensitive to begin with. Completely agree. And it's participating in those things (be it research or something unsafe like Ouija) that taps into something they didn't know they had.

I personally do not believe that researching anything paranormal will bring them into your home. I think that if you look into it long enough, you may start feeling scared and then your imagination messes with you.
