As I put it in a conversation with contessagrrl earlier, if the republic can survive 8 years of George W. Bush, we can survive at least 4 years of Obama. Probably. I can't pretend that I wanted McCain to win, but I'm far from excited about the coming Obama presidency. The bright side is there is a chance the republicans will get back on the small government ( Read more... )

Because we're a two-party country, obviously.

The politics of failure have failed! We need to make them work again!

Word.

That said, I was kind of hoping for divided government, though. I get antsy whenever one party has that kind of control over both branches.

The Democrats will screw it up so badly that at the midterm elections the Republicans will gain back seats in the House.

Right, I highly doubt they'll get any more than two years. I'm hoping for Bill Clinton 2.0--two years of ridiculous single-party rule, followed by six years of Gingrich-esque legistlature gumming up the works.

There is a time and a place for the government to step in and be large and in charge. Massive, deep recessions are that. The trick of course, is getting the government to let go once it has finished doing it's job. I suppose either Obama will evolve and figure that out by the time his second term arrives or we will elect someone else.

I am nervous about having the Dems so wholly in power. They're just another bunch of politicians and there's no a priori reason to believe they know how to fix this country any more than a lot of smart Republicans do.

However, I think having a dominant party gives us a lot of agility. It's like being in a start-up where decisions can get made quickly and change can occur fast. I am hoping sacrificing the objectivity of a balance is worth it for the speed of being able to enact important legislation.

Also - I'm willing to suspend judgement on the whole thing until I see his cabinet picks.

the 'dominant party' thing is the same reason that GWBush was so famously quoted as saying that his job would be a lot easier were he a dictator.

In the end, though, it was his choices, mistakes if you will, that led to a democratic majority in congress that balked him at every turn.

The Ideal that I want out of a leader, and maybe it'll be Obama, is someone to actually unite all the other leaders around him into groups that can work together toward whatever the hell they finally decide that we want or need.

Look at the upside: calling everyone 'comrade' from now on will really cut down on those *snap snap* what's his name? embarrassing moments.
