Alfred breathes. Then, “He can pay it back. He will pay it back, when you ask.” He licks his chapped lips. “A-any amount you want, yeah? He’s loaded up the ass with cash, even if he pretends he’s broke sometimes.”
“What an awful game,” tsks Yao.
“Right? Ha ha.”
“I owed a man money once,” Yao continues. “When my parents came to this country, they worked until they became ghosts to pay back this man. When they died, their debt fell to me.” He eyes Alfred critically, an appraiser deeming his worth. “I was a cook-you can still see the burns on my elbows, as far as my sleeves would roll up-and an artist on the side. I learned the route of the drug runners, but never joined them. And when the time came, I cleared all that I owed, and he still asked me to give more.”
In an aside, Yao glances at Russia and adds, “Of course, I cut open his belly and made him drink his own blood until he drowned. What a valuable lesson! I never ask from my borrowers more than they’ve taken.”

Yao gives him an easy, pleased huff. “I said that I didn’t intend to hurt Matthew Kirkland. As you can see, this is not Matthew Kirkland.”
Alfred’s wide, panicked eyes meet Russia’s over the silk embroidery covering Yao’s outstretched arm. His face is leeched of all color; he already seems like a corpse, stiff-limbed and drawn. He’s scared, Russia thinks, truly scared in a way Russia hasn’t seen before. He wears it as boldly as he does every other emotion.
Chuckling, Yao draws the tip of the pistol over his mouth as though imparting a kiss. “No, I need Matthew. Once his father gets himself killed in a drunken fit of stupidity-which, if he continues in this vein, could come as quickly as Christmas-Matthew will take on the responsibility of paying back his father’s debt. I’ve done a great deal of research on these borrowers; it’s necessary for this business. Matthew’s a quiet, small pet. Easy to control. “Yes, I am.”
Kiku glances at Yao but says nothing. He takes a compact cell phone from his coat and taps the screen a few times.
“Do you have a bank account?” asks Yao.
“No.”
“Kiku, prepare cash.”
Tupt tupt tupt tupt. Kiku maps out information in even, precise spaces. When he’s finished, he folds it back into the inside lining of the coat without pause. His accent is Japanese, lilting: “It will be ready at the door.”
Alfred finds a breath to give him voice. “Please don’t do this, Dad would pay you so much money for-”
“Begging, Alfred, isn’t very cute.” Yao strokes his hair, deceptively thin fingers raking the unruly tufts from their already uncertain places. “You shouldn’t waste your time with it.”
It’s not you he’s begging, Russia thinks. It seems impossible to miss-does no one else see it

Oooohh my god. My heart nearly stopped for joy when I saw that you had updated--and then it nearly stopped again, multiple times with every other line that came out of Yao or Ivan's mouth.
This is so amazing--I just want to cry right now, I don't even know why--it's like I'm intensely afraid and so deeply sad for Alfred and Ivan (but you've made Yao sympathetic as well)...so there's just so much hurt and tension...but it's also such exquisite discomfort, I can't even.
The way you describe Alfred makes my heart ache. In all the best ways. Actually, the way you describe pretty much everything from the smell of the kidnapper bag to the fisheries, and Ivan's thoughts and Kiku's manner...is simply breathtaking.
I'm so glad you updated. (lol this is probably blasphemy but I was actually looking forward to an update to mongoose more than general relativity XDDD *shot*--mostly because GR is already winding down and holy shit, Mongoose is getting exciting fast. Why are you so awesome. So much awesome fic from you ♥)

No way is this a letdown, this is awesome! If this is just you having fun with it I approve of your way of having fun. I really like this fill; it's one of the ones that always makes me grin whenever I see an update on the fills list.

I almost jumped out of my chair with joy when I read the last sentence. Oh god, Russia you are my hero!!!On the other hand, the mystery with Alfred just deepens ._. I have some weird and outlandish theories going on in my head right now, and I am very scared XD
Oh author anon this was seriously the most amazing thing I've read in a while. Just...yeah...the way the tension builds the way that Alfred basically pleads with Russia for his life instead of Yao. All the descriptions the way you let us glimpse a bit more into Alfred's history and that of his family.
Just...there's so much to love with this and so much more I'm looking forward to reading of it. It makes me happy to hear you're having fun with it because I'm having so much fun reading it and there is no way anything you write could ever be a let down so just...stop that!
