It would make sense that Matthew dissociated himself from his previous life because reconciling his previous life and his abused life would probably be painful. Living inside with Russia and behaving how Russia wanted him to was 'safe' and 'good' compared to the kennel. Remembering his life before would expose that for the continued abuse it was and leave him without a leg to stand on emotionally/psychologically. I don't know enough about this to give an opinion as to whether those memories could be gone entirely. /armchair psychologist

D: so it was more than half a year. Gods Alfred! Don't worry the Interludes are nice and completely justified. (This anon so wants to see if Matthew can talk like a normal human or not)
as for the question, it actually depends whether the trauma had been strong enough or not. I see it as a completely devastating event, so most probably he might remember things before-Russia a lot fuzzier -even adding things of his own imagination (like fighting with other dogs or things like that)- and he might re-experience (mentally or physically) those events again by whichever trigger (like for example, someone giving him food, or having to sit on the table to eat it). Though if you are aiming for a severe emotional exhaustion for Canada then repress his memories :D

Thank you reviewer!anons!! You helped me decide which way to take this (I had about three different scenes sketched out) and I hope it turns out okay. I will be continuing the format - flashbacks of time with Russia between scenes in After-Rescue time - mostly because I don't want to stop, and I did kind of skim over it. Please tell me if it gets annoying. Thanks.

~watching as he walks away, leaving you behind without a word~
The thought vanishes as quickly as it came, but when America's hand touches his arm, Canada pulls away and the look on America's face is so pained that it tears at his heart.
“I'm not going to hurt you, Mattie. Please, just tell me what's wrong.”
Canada barks twice, suddenly wondering if this is some sort of test; perhaps a way for Russia to know if he's capable of being good when Russia is not around. Maybe he is not being punished.
With that thought, Canada begins to wriggle out of his shirt - dogs do not wear clothes. He would not fail. He would never give Russia a reason to leave him

Accidentally posted the wrong version of 7b. It's just the last bit that got changed, so please disregard everything after "there is no answer" and insert this. Thanks. There is no answer. Only a gentle hug, arms pulling him in and holding him so close. It is different than Russia's embraces, in ways Canada can't quite make out. Perhaps it is the way America holds him, as if he might break at any moment, or in the way that he isn't simply offering comfort but taking comfort as well. Whatever the difference, Canada can't help but lean into the familiar warmth of this not-stranger's arms

OMG YES! HE CAN'T TALK! A!A you have no idea how happy you've made me. I was becoming teary-eyed as I was reading, but the fact that he can't talk didn't let me she a single tear. I've become such a horrible person to take delight on something like this D:
But yes, Canada woke up and he is still in Dog!Mode it's kinda nice to see America so vunerable and dog!Canada who doesn't understand much. I wonder how the healing will go, and the reaction of the rest of the FACE family. It'll be good. will there be any sanctions to Russia?
Also this anon didn't know you update dayly, and so this anon is now a happy anon!

Yay for reviewers! I will probably not be posting again until the weekend - the next few parts still need edited and I have to work on my research paper in order to not fail my writing class. Happy!anon - Russia will be sanctioned, but that might take a while. Especially at the pace I'm going.
Canada shifted nervously in his nest of blankets, hyper aware of Russia's absence and his own virtual helplessness. If the house caught on fire, or if Belarus decided to pay Russia a surprise visit, he would be trapped in the kitchen with useless hands and no way out. He would die alone, and Russia would bury whatever was left of him in the yard under the headstone “Dog” and proceed to forget he had ever existed

After a long while of just sitting there with his arms wrapped around Canada, America lets go. His eyes are red and sad, but he smiles widely at Canada's curious gaze.
“It'll be okay, Mattie. You'll be better in no time, .”
Canada tilts his head, completely baffled at America's thought process. His stomach chose that moment to growl.
“You're hungry?”
Canada nods, looking away timidly.
“Hey, hey,” America's hand on his shoulder pulls him back to meet serious blue eyes. “You don't have to be all shy around me. I'm not Russia. I would never hurt you. Please, Matt, I know I messed up, but I don't want you scared of me. All you have to do is ask, and I'll get you anything. Soup, pancakes, the moon - just don't be scared of me.”
Canada nods, his stomach rolling with anxiety. For some inexplicable reason, he wasn't afraid of this strange man, just a little shy being around someone who wasn't Russia after so long barely realizing there were people other than Russia, but America told him to talk, to ask, as if he expected it

I wouldnt say slowly (it seem to be going at a pretty good pace to me, and im loving the pastprts show Canada falling further into dog staus). maybe making the entry longer or something? This is making me cry by the way. Just America's reactions and Canada's confusion about said reactions are heart wrenching.

America is just lucky Canada is one of those friendly dogs and not the types that bite anyone who isn't their master. God it tears me so much. You are tearing me apart anon! But I really enjoy how America slowly realised that something is wrong with Canada and that Russia didn't just tack on a collar on him.
I wish to give you good luck on your paper. But I'm also scared because I think I remember you stating that if you didn't update on a regular basis you risk the chance of abandoning this story. So... please make sure you come back author!anon. I'll be waiting for you~ T_T

Sorry about the wait. I barely had energy for school last week, much less for anything not absolutely essential. Plus, I may have completely changed the direction I was going to take this story, and therefore had to toss out most of what I'd already written and start from scratch. Please tell me if something doesn't work, or if I messed up somewhere. Also, my homework load is only increasing as the semester nears an end, so I probably won't be able to go back to daily updates, though I will try to update at least once a week and the updates will be a bit longer. Thanks to my reviewers. I hope you continue to enjoy the story.
