I feel for you. Job stress like this is no fun at all. My own company is about to go through Very Weird Times.

I hope this doesn't come off as flippant or improper -- but what about seeking another job? The Bay Area's really ramping up with opportunity again. Is finding another, better-paying position a possibility for you?

Move, but look for a new job on the side while you have this one. If they can't cut you after you move, you have a perfect situation for looking elsewhere. And all you have to do if asked why you quit is to remind them of how they reneged on their agreement to pay you $x.

The Midwest is not that bad. Really.

...not to mention that you're going to end up retaining possession of their most valuable asset: their database. If they renege, you can always shop it around. (This would probably technically be a violation of California law [corporate espionage], but I'm not so sure about Ohio, and your rules of engagement suddenly become Ohio's if you move.)

Remember, not everything about the situation is bad. Just because you were hired in California doesn't mean squat if your job location changes to another state. (Besides, all of a sudden they have to deal with Federal laws relating to interstate commerce... which gives you another advantage if they renege.)

Ultimately, this will be your decision to make. It looks like you're weighing your social life against your economic life. Socially, you want to be out in California to enjoy the life that you currently have with your friends. Economically, it may make sense to move back to Ohio and reduce your cost of living ( ... )

Well.. Being in the same position... torn up about having to leave CA, the place that feels like home in order to move to Ohio for work...

actually, I can't offer any advice. I'd much rather be moving back to the bay area, but due to the job and due to NOT having a job in the bay area, I'm going to Ohio.

If you could stand to get together sometime.. maybe we could hang a bit, in Ohio. Wouldn't be much.. but at least we could commisserate and raise some kind of hell. And maybe find some good Ethiopian.

Make DAMN sure the reasons you're thinking about leaving are the right reasons. You opened this post with comments about feeling lost and abandoned; make sure that underneath your justifications for moving (cost of living, job, family), there isn't some emotional subtext ( ... )

I understand, Rev. I can honestly state in no uncertain terms I want to stay here in the Bay area. I opened with the comments I did, because there was a time when I WAS bitching and moaning.. because I demanded too much time from my friends, more time than they had to give and was whining about it. That's not the case anymore.

The economic reasons are real; my pay IS going to be cut by a large percentage. I can't live on the remainder, alone, and I'm having trouble finding a roomate.

Am I leaving for the right reasons? I'm leaving because if I don't, I can't live well, or perhaps at all, without depleting my resources. I want to stay. If I got a decent paying job, I WOULD stay, and tell Alan to either piss off, or convert me to part time and I'll run his problems after working hours. But without that other job, I don't have that option.
