I purchased a hard-sided train case from etsy vintage recently. It arrived today and unfortunately it has a smokey/old smell to it. Which is sort of expected being that it is a vintage item. At first I thought it was just musty, but in walking by it a few times, I can definitely smell an underlining cigarette smell.

I'd start by wiping the exterior down with vinegar, assuming it has a fabric liner I'd spray it with vodka, it might take a couple cycles but it should work.

I would ball up lots of newspaper and stick it in there. I might also put an open container of baking soda in there. Both should soak up the smells.

I wouldn't use Fabreeze, Lysol, or sachets, because it seems like you're just trying to mask the smell, instead of get rid of it.

Dryer sheets will remove the smell - it might end up smelling like them, but it's better than smoke.

Activated Charcoal does WONDERS for smokey smells!

Spray with vinegar or vodka, inside and out, and let sit in the sun (outside, if it's dry enough). Repeat until the smell is gone...may take a while. Alternatively, activated charcoal and/or baking soda inside (you could try alternating open with vinegar/sun during the day, then closed with charcoal/baking soda at night).

Scented things like Febreeze/lavender/dryer sheets should wait until the smell is gone.
