I think it's time for Michigan to put into place a law banning the use of hand held cell phones while driving. It seems to be working in California.

I saw this guy texting while he was on his motorcycle yesterday... as if riding a motorcycle isn't dangerous enough.

I think it's time to stop passing laws with unintended consequences. If he can do that while keeping the bike under control, more power to him. If not, he's driving recklessly and can be cited for that.

Most of the time, if someone is doing something wrong, they're already breaking some law or another. Making more and more redundant laws does not solve the issue, however.

I see your point. However I don't know if I necessarily agree with it. You could take a similar example of drinking and driving. Because I don't really see a difference between that and being on your cell phone/ texting. Should people be allowed to consume as much alcohol as they want and then when they get in a crash, then simply be cited for reckless driving? Go ahead and drink, hop behind the driver's seat, just make sure you are able to control the car.
I just think if some laws are in place it would really make people think before they act therefore cutting down on needless accidents.

People should be held responsible for their actions which negatively impact others. A huge and growing plethora of ever finer sliced laws does nothing to accomplish this aim. As for your point that laws make people think, I disagree. The people who are mindful of the law are mindful in general. The people who are heedless, will still be heedless of the new law.

I wouldn't want to be the person who loses someone because someone who "thought" they were under control of their car crashes into someone innocent.

There will always be those who disregard the laws, but by putting a law in place, you also discourage a lot of people who are currently committing the offending behavior to stop. I can't stop the people who are going to commit the offense regardless, but we CAN stop those who will follow a law.

And I agree with Rachel, it's been shown by too many research groups that texting/cell phone use while driving is more dangerous than driving drunk. I seriously hope they ban them in Michigan.
