I would put Super Mario Bros. for this, but I'd rather not do one game for this sort of question twice in the same meme. And Mega Man II is a classic platforming game.
Mega Man and Mega Man II are kind of like Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam -- the first established a setting, the second established a franchise. It was Mega Man II that proved that Mega Man had potential as a franchise, and Keiji Inafune himself has stated that Mega Man II is his favorite Mega Man game.
Mega Man II set a lot of standards for the series -- eight bosses instead of six, multiple abilities to assist in platforming or just getting through stages, passwords, E-Tanks, and Dr. Wily's tenacity. It also has the best and most memorable music in the classic series (case in point: I was still humming Mega Man II songs roughly 12 years since I had last played the game), has some of the series' best stage designs, and the most iconic weapons (the most iconic, of course, being the Metal Blade). If you haven't played a Mega Man game before, this is the one to start with.
