wow, hustle & bustle for sure. at least richard is making the numbers even. i'm thinking about going vegetarian again, or at least 95% so once i find an apartment here in paris, although it is a very, very meat-oriented culture...and not just beef & horse, but weird innards and fois gras and stuff. their idea of a vegetarian lunch is a sandwich with mayonnaise and maybe cheese if you pay an extra euro. anyway, good luck :)

fois gras is fucking gross as hell. and the way it's made makes me want to vomit more than usual.

i feel you, i'm living in france right now and it's really hard to find vegetarian choices. i even had a french woman insist to me that vegetarians should eat fish because fish aren't animals. ???!!!

it's not really about indulging in their culture--it's about being open to learning from people who have lived a certain way for thousands of years, and realizing that while i have strong opinions about animals, other people have different opinions, too, and they're just as valid as mine.

i'm coming home a week from tomorrow! we will ride dirty and eat more pancakes.

oh shit! i forgot to tell you! i have a present for you! the only thing i'll say about it is that it's food, and that you will definitely like it. and there's a lot of it.

i don't think it would have been rude at all to turn down meat from these people. i don't think it would have taken away from your experience there. i don't think that doing so would be insulting their way of life either. and i don't think that not eating meat should be an american thing. it's just a general principle i think. but that's your choice to choose ( ... )

veganism in Mexico just doesn't work. anonymous May 1 2007, 02:47:45 UTC
Coming from a latin culture, and travelling through mexico Thoroughly I assure you that it is embedded in their culture (like you expect) The people will not understand the concept of a person not eatting meat or Dairy.

The meat in mexico is very healthy compared to the U.S. for the pure fact that the majority of it is raised on the land the grow corn. Its a beautiful thing to be a part of and I dont think you should miss out.

Although I would try eatting a little meat before you go.. Nothing like burgers or fast food. But more like a little peice of chicken. Which is mostly what meat they use.

peace.

in mexico, the meat i will be eating will, for the most part, not be loaded with growth hormones. also, chicken is much better for you than beef--there's less cholesterol, saturated fat, fat, etc.

Talk about privilege.

I had a vegan yell at me before for continuing to be vegetarian (instead of going vegan) because I was homeless, trying to finish high school, and most of the time could only afford a loaf of day-old Wonder Bread that I kept in my locker at school. That's what also really bothers me about the whole "go organic" movement. Yes, I agree with buying/growing organic, but I also understand that not everyone is in a position to be able to afford it. Not being able to buy organic or be vegan does not make one a bad person.

By the way, Micah, my girlfriend was telling me a couple months ago about that same group that you're going to be working with, but she couldn't remember the name. I was really interested in getting involved. Would you happen to have contact info for them?
