I was thinking they reminded me of the tree children in Princess Mononoke. :) Totally get the Totoro vibe, though.

I really loved this ep, thought it was a great season opener, and I'm really glad they set up straight off that there's not going to be any funny business between Donna and the Doctor. I really miss Martha and love Freema Agyeman, but I felt the constant high school crush held her character back.

I think they were semi-spooky at first like the white creatures from Princess Mononoke, but then they seemed non-threatening, so my impression switched to Totoro instead.

The lack of overt funny business between the Doctor and Donna means that there will be UST instead! At least, I hope so, because I like UST! UST can make the fangirl's world go 'round. Hee hee!

The adipose creatures looked like they walked out of *Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)*

Yes! I can see exactly what you mean there.

I really liked the episode, I like Donna's personality. I think she'll be good for the tone of the show. But yes, disappearing Rose was spooky! I think some people missed the spookiness in the excitement of seeing her.

Yeap, I get that impression reading through the fandom stuff. I guess that instead of being "yay, Rose!" or "boo, Rose!", I was in the "what's wrong with Rose and why does she look so... weird?" camp.

I don't think we'll get a reappearance of her or more hints about what's going on until Episode 4 at the earliest.

I have a terrible feeling that Rose will be the season's Big Bad. She's found a way back into this world, only to see her beloved in the arms of some floozy, and it ain't gonna end well.

I know this thread is OLD, but I just finally saw this episode last night and I remembered you'd written about it ( ... )

Well, I like dark (especially knowing my kinks in fanfiction... yay for dark!) but I also think that one has to take into account the typical primary audience for Doctor Who is a family audience. In the end, the Doctor *has* to triumph. Good will beat out the evil. And even if it isn't a happy ending, it is not a too-sad one ( ... )
