Arthur didn't even know he was pregnant until a terrified Eames shook him awake one night and he was covered in blood, so he shouldn't care that he lost the baby right? He shouldn't be wondering if he could have prevented it, or wondering what the child would have looked like...at least that's what he keeps telling himself. So he tries to make himself feel nothing, and if that means he has to push Eames away, so be it. He figures Eames probably blames him anyways.

(I'm just in the mood for a really angsty fic.)

This is heartbreaking, especially the part where Arthur compares himself to Mal when she was pregnant. That came across as really true - Arthur looking back on his lifestyle over the past three months and thinking of what might have been if only he had known. Sigh :(

This is my face right now, literally ;_;. And I'm busy working a shift with people all around me. My heart, she no longer exists, the pain was too much for her.

Well, I must say you've touched a nerve in me with this story, anon. You've done an excellent job of conveying Arthur's guilt and disappointment with the loss of this pregnancy and Eames trying to be loving and supportive.

Thankfully, I have never had to suffer a miscarriage, but I've certainly been on the receiving end of less than caring hospital staff, so I had to WTF at nurse Crystal's callous comments about Arthur's loss. In my country, an ultrasound technician would probably be fired for being so unprofessional -

“Bet that was a nasty surprise.” Crystal replaced the transducer in its holder and cleaned away the goop. “I suppose it makes you lucky in a way. Not being attached to it and all.”Gah! I wanted to strangle her and I will attribute that to your talent as a writer. I ache so much for Arthur and Eames in this fic and the emotional upheavals I foresee that are in store for them. Hopefully their relationship will be strong enough to survive it. This is such an emotionally wrenching and brilliantly characterized story you'

Night had fallen by the time Arthur was discharged after his surgery. Since Eames had walked back to the hospital after collecting some clothes for Arthur, they travelled home in a taxi that scurried through the city like a shiny black beetle. They sat in the back, a pair of dishevelled wrecks with skin pale as bleach bone, and neither of them made any attempt to speak or touch to one another. Arthur decided he must have gone into a trance or fallen asleep with his eyes open because he was startled by the caw of a seagull and was confused to find billowing grey clouds curling across the sky, blocking the weak sunlight that just filtered through. The last thing he could remember was sitting in the darkness, finding a channel that didn’t hurt his senses and staring right through the television screen, not seeing anything

Arthur located the piece about pregnancy tissue karyotyping that he had broken off from in the early hours that morning and continued reading. He made his way through another four articles that regurgitated the same information and had just started one that discussed foetal cardiac activity when he heard the jangle of keys and the front door creaking open. He turned in his seat and was so surprised to find Eames wrapped up in his black winter coat and coming through the doorway that he couldn’t help “Oh,” slipping from his lips

The image of Arthur reading pregnancy articles and looking at miscarriage forums, while still blaming himself, is just heart-breaking. :(
