"Well, what the author means to says with this sentence is..."endless_bouquetFebruary 11 2006, 16:33:47 UTC
In many cases, it is a bad idea to get the author to talk about their own work. Arthur Miller, for example, prattles on and shows us all how smart he is. Whenever I read his introductions or interjections I want to smack his glasses off his face.
I took a Toni Morrison seminar class in grad school over one summer. We read a novel a week. The Bluest Eye, Sula, Tar Baby, Beloved. I liked what I read except for Tar Baby, which was, of course, the professor's favorite.
My advice would be to just start every sentence in the class discussion with "Speaking as a black woman..." All of those people in my class totally got an "A"!
