"I've been telling people I was 21 since ages ago - or were you under the impression that I would just feed them my real personal information for free?"

Really, that guy is too hard to deal with.
Since high school I've made use of everything I could to get my hands on all that I call my own now. Only one person refused to do as I hoped under all circumstances. That's Heiwajima Shizuo.
- At first I had thought I would be able to use Shizu-chan as well.
[...]
It was a smile resting somewhere between unsettled and pleased.
Meeting Aoba in person. "That - is why I hate you so much, Shizu-chan."

“Hm… There’re quite a few. You don’t need me to tell you about guys like the yakuza or gangsters… If we’re talking about guys Mikado might run into, there’s the two I mentioned earlier, and another person called Orihara Izaya. But you know, that guy’s seriously bad news, so whatever you do, never have anything to do with him. Well, he’s mostly a Shinjuku guy, so you shouldn’t bump into him in the first place.”
“Orihara Izaya… What a weird name.”
“Like you’re one to talk.”

【Do you know about a person called Orihara Izaya?】
【I heard about him from a friend, but he told me to never get involved with this person】
【Is he scary? Then again, there’s no reason you’ll know him. Sorry】
[…]
[Tanaka Tarou-san, is your friend one of those people?]
【Ah, no, he’s a normal guy】
[Ah, I see. Sorry. The less you have to do with Orihara Izaya, the better, really. He’s serious trouble.]

""You have a point. Hopefully no bullies are gonna pick on them...but it's not like we can avoid it."
Still sighing, the information dealer's face at last broke into a sarcastic grin.
"Poor things."
"Do you find that funny? Aren't they your family after all?"
[...]
"I wasn't talking about Kururi and Mairu...I was talking about the bullies."
"Huh?"
"Wasn't I telling you just now? They turned out abnormal because of my influence."
"Say...if I were bullied, do you think I would just leave my bullies be?"

He was way younger than I imagined.
Way too young for owning an upscale apartment in Shinjuku. Too ridiculously young, in fact, for an information broker who supposedly controls the flow of underground information in this town. He had to be still in his twenties.

A sphinx's smile appeared on the young man's beautiful face as he leaned his slender body into the sofa.
On the table between us there was a shogi board. It had three king pieces on it - something that struck me as rather odd.

Fight ability! Ranked, even, with others of the same...fighting-ness.
Can you actually kill people?
You, an information broker in Shinjuku who likes to play around with several people at once.
Yet you love the humankind more than anyone else, don't you?
I'm asking you, Orihara Izaya.
Can you actually kill people? With your own hands, can you kill them?
Even with your switchblade you just stab randomly without aiming at anywhere fatal. You fool around, that's what you do.
So when all's said and done......you got no tricks up your sleeves except for manipulating others.
What a lowlife and coward you are. It makes me laugh.
(Simon delivered this speech entirely in Russian to Izaya after punching Izaya squarely in the face. ...And Izaya understood it. from

Orihara Izaya (Durarara):
It's too addicting, it's too addicting, it's too addicting! Even for an information broker like me there are things completely unknown to me happening and happening and appearing before my eyes and lapsing back into unknown every single day. That is why I can never ever leave the places where humans abound! Humans, LOVE! I LOVE HUMANS! I LOVE YOU ALL! THAT'S WHY YOU ALL SHOULD LOVE ME TOO!

What appeared on Izaya's face was indeed a smile. Although, the smile that came forth was something totally different from anything before. The two girls thought for the first time that there were different variations on smiles.
That smile he had on was a smile that was a smile but, almost expressionless like a mask. It was an infinitely cold smile that was a smile, and yet gives a sense of fear to those who witnessed it. It was that kind of smile.
[...]
At the momentary eternity, Izaya closed his eyes once again -- the next moment he opened his eyes, his smile changed back into something gentle that will put a person who's never seen him, at ease.

"I'm bored and there's no profit from doing that and won't pay enough for the labor. If I do any more, cops or the mafia will do some serious investigation. This isn't part of my job and I'm just doing this as a hobby anyway. Oh, thanks for today. All the handimen who I use all the time seemed occupied. Normally, I would deliver them to their homes but, with your motorcycle I figured this was your limit."

"I generally don't think there is one. That is why I'm honestly scared to die. I would love to live as long as I can."

Orihara Izaya is a normal human.
It wasn't like he reacted with violence like a villain nor was he that excessively cool nor was he the type that would not have any emotions when killing people.
However, the greed normal people would have along with the taboos normal people would not dare to step past was what he had both of completely. He was not a charisma of evil and he was more like a creature innocently curious about himself. This "hobby" of his assisted him and from there, he lived a life where he profited by selling the information gathered to underground organization and the police.
Although, his name was well known in different areas and Izaya himself understood that himself. Normally, people would not read "臨也" as "Izaya" but -- it was a name given to him taken from the prophet, Isaiah in the bible, along with the meaning of "the one who looks over". He lived a life far different from what the bible said, but either due to that or not, he did have the passion and ability far beyond the norm for desiring all sorts of incidents. Resulting from that, was his current life now.
He treasured human life just as much as the normal people did and made sure he understood his limits. Thanks to that, he has yet to be erased by the dark side of the world and was able to spend his daily life concentrating his hobbies.

"How exciting. Exciting. Exciting. There's so many things over flowing in this city even I, as the informant doesn't know, they are created and then disappears. This is why I cannot get away from cities where people gather! People, love! I like people! I love them! That is why people should love me too."

They dropped their smiles as soon as they stepped into the elevator.
"I don't suppose we've met before?"
"No, I figure not. But chances are that we've talked online under fake names."
[...]
"But still, you are something. I never expected there to be a middle school kid among 'them'. Maybe that's one of the things networks like Dollars allow you to do. I don't think 'they' would ever have expected that the one who gave them so much advice online was a mere middle school kid. I myself, for one, have never in my wildest imagination expected that you would have somehow gotten my personal information."
[...]
"But my, your face didn't change in the slightest even when a man you'd never seen before was lying to your mother pretending to be your teacher at the cram school. That was something, that was. You knew that you would have to talk to me first. It would have been more dangerous to you than it would have been to me if you simply called the police not knowing exactly how much I knew."
[...]
"I knew it at first glance. You are my kind. Even though I love all humans, you have to admit that likes do still repel each other. But I already know a person who makes me madder than you can ever make me. Next to him even you look like an interesting and humanly human being. That is why I can stand here and talk to you with a cool head."
[...]
"I had come here with the intention of making you one of my pawns……but I changed my idea. I feel like it's better that we remain rivals. I have no idea what you're after sticking your head in that business between Shishizaki-sempai and 'them', but I'm interested in what you're doing."
After that, Izaya continued to speak as if to an equal to the middle school boy right next to him:
"I won't suggest that we join forces. But let us use each other to our heart's content, shall we?"
"I like using others, but I hate to be used."
"You have to love humans more. That way maybe one day you'll be able to meet someone whom you would be dying to be used by. I haven't met such a person yet, but since I'm in love with all humankind I believe I can survive on my masochist's pleasure alone even if I'm used."
"……I found it. One of the things that make us different."
The boy stared at Izaya and said as if he wanted the words out of his mouth as soon as possible.
"I hate humans. You're probably going to be the human I hate the most."

After looking up at the estimated time of arrival for the next train, Izaya went back to playing with his cell phone, checking his text messages one by one.
"Let's see. It's going to be no fun if Dollars's not fighting back even a teeny little bit."
Muttering these words to himself, Izaya took a second cell phone out of his breast pocket.
