Oh my god, I kind of want you to write about a thousand sequels to this story so I can see how Bill and Patrick are together, as Bill reminds Patrick about putting sunscreen on and then tangles his fingers in the stretched-out collar of Patrick's t-shirt, and, yeah, I really enjoyed this story a lot. I loved the body-language in this, the way you got it right, the intimacy that means "friends" and the intimacy that means "more than" and the confusing crossover between the two. You made Bill Beckett pine. I'm such a fan, you have no idea, and I've always loved the way you write Patrick.
Thank you! That really means a lot, since I love the way you write... well, pretty much everyone. I liked writing that, those differences in what Bill was accustomed to with Patrick and what Patrick was with Bill.
I'll trade you a sequel for a sequel if you wrote more "A Common Understanding" universe?
So I'm on a rereading kick, and it was so fun for me to reread this one because this story was one of the things that I told aweirdsister about as we walked the trail this summer. I wanted to tell her about the different ideas I'd gotten for ACU sequels/companions, and that necessitated telling her about this comment which necessitated telling her about this story in a rather shaky chain of logic. I think I was trying to make her realize through badly-summarized narrative how awesome this story was and how worthy it was of a million sequels and stuff and how I REALLY WANTED TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN except I was hiking up through the state of California HOW UNFAIR, and thus. Also, it gave us something to occupy our time while we were walking. I then had to summarize ACU, which used up even more time and was also easier as I had written it so I could remember the key dialogue better. ANYWAY.
So this time around when I was reading I also was remembering where I was when I told aweirdsister about this story, how it was an overcast day and we were walking

I think I find that with travelling generally. Walking, sitting on the bus, on the train. Something about the process of travel and the fact of movement, maybe

This is delightful. I'm always a total sucker for pining, especially the repressed, in-denial kind, and you've nailed it here. Who knew Bill Beckett would be so good at pining?
I adore your Bill, and love Patrick, Travis, Pete, all the other guys here.
