When parents make kids responsible for things they should take care of or talk to them as though they're peers, it leads to the kids growing up feeling responsible for things they can't possibly control. And it's really hard to figure those things out on your own. So congratulations on getting help with that. It takes some time for those realizations to really become second nature.

I spoke with a student today who is having academic problems. She never had to study in high school. She did have to work to support her mother and did that. She gave her mother her book money for rent and bills. She wonders why she's unable to concentrate and why she's so worried. It seems obvious to everyone around her. But she feels responsible. I'm writing this in part because I know it's easier to see how unreasonable her mother's treatment of her and her expectations of herself are than to be understanding to yourself.

you hit it- it's always been easier to be understanding of my parents' problems (especially my dad's) than it is to be of me. i've always jumped to help and understand what's wrong with them, but haven't done so much for myself (until now). hmm- you've given me something else to consider.

i hope the best for your student. she's probablly a bright girl who will do well if she'll go a little easier on herself (and a little harder on mom).
