Peter Schjeldahl's New Yorker review of Shepard Fairey's show at the Boston ICA is "ouch," but I pretty much agree with it.

...It is of a piece with Fairey's energetic but unoriginal enterprise involving a repertoire of well-worn provocations--imitations of Soviet agitprop on shopping bags designed for Saks, to cite one example.

I just finished Arthur Koestler's Arrival and Departure, the third book in his anti-totalitarian trilogy, which also includes Darkness at Noon. I really enjoyed it.
