I don't know what you've read thus far, but amazing books that I love and suggest are;

Night-Elie Wiesel
The Alchemist- Paolo Coehlo
The Five People You Meet in Heaven-Mitch Albom
White Oleander-Janet Fitch
Into the Wild-Jon Krakauer
The Perks of Being a Wallflower-Stephen Chbosky
Angela's Ashes-Frank McCourt

Anything by John Irving is EXCELLENT!!! I have almost everything he's ever written if you want to borrow any of them. David Sedaris is also a wonderful author. Slaughter House Five is a great read, and so is the Acid House (a compilation of short stories by the guy that wrote Trainspotting.)

John Irving is fiction/drama/comedy. David Sedaris writes creative humorous nonfiction. Thye are both the kind of stuff that makes you think and laugh at the same time.
