Dude, I know. Did you see the part where she says her obsession isn't fair to her kids? I mean, ya think?

Oh, that's got nothing on the boy band crazies.

*boggles*

Seriously? Because as far as crazy on the internet goes, this is the most whacked out I've seen. You're telling me it gets worse?

...got any links? *g*

Oh yeah, after all real people will lend themselves to "omg I'm so truly in love with you" than characters (seriously, that Snape thing is the type of thing you'd find on nearly every BSB page). However, perhaps that may seem not to lend itself to the crazy as much, but I assure you it does. There have been many-a-story of the crazy things fans have attempted, including there being a female who wanted to attempt a romeo and juliet type 'ending' with AJ. Never mind all the freakin' crazy girls screaming "I LOVE YOU AJ!" as if their lives were ending, behind me at each freakin' BSB show I saw, even though we were VERY far from his ear reach (and with the little ear pieces in his ears, he couldn't *hear* anything anyway). But that's not even the tip of the iceberg.

Though Harry Potter will likely have more such crazies now, seeing as how boy bands aren't popular anymore. But as a testament to their crazy, plenty are still hanging on.

Ah, but pledging eternal love and thinking you're actually in communication with a real person is slightly less crazy than doing so with a fictional character, isn't it? Although that Romeo and Juliet ending does sound rather on the drastic side.

Yeah HP is just one batshit crazy insane fandom. Problem is that there are SO many people and so many young people and so much character/relationship love that there are bound to be people who take it way too far. I heard of that back in the day not to mention Msscribe, Cassandra Claire, Harmonians and all the other shipper wars that go on out there. I mostly avoid it until a new book comes out. It does make you wonder at how insane people can be.

I can understand having strong feelings about a fandom, and getting excited about things, but there's a certain dividing line between entertainment and reality that one has to remember. Except some people, apparently, are not aware of that line. Some of those names you mention I do remember, just from skimming Fandom Wank, and I kind of wonder if they're not just putting on a huge show to become famous on the internet. I fear, however, that you really can't fake that kind of crazy. Not with that degree of dedication, anyway.

This indicates to me that one way to measure fame is to gauge the level of crazy it induces on the internet.

Or it could be an indication of the maturity of the fandom... ;)

Mmm, true, although I find that, scarily, most of the real crazies are not kids. Of course, age and maturity are two different things, but still, you'd expect people over 50 (as many in the Clay Aiken fandom, for example, are) to show a bit more sense.

I wonder if the older the fan is, the more fannish they get towards the younger set. There is something about not wanting to lose any aspect of youth that makes older women (men) desire the younger, unattainable person.

Makes me wonder what we'll be like when we're in our 50's. This extreme fandom thing will be the norm as we grow older, it's something our parents never experienced.

That's interesting, especially as with the except of Clay, pretty much all my fannish interests lie with men much older than me. So maybe older fans gravitate toward the younger? Of course, for just about any fan, the object of their affection is unattainable, regardless of age.

I've never been able to get into Harry Potter (I like the books, but the over-hype just takes the joy out of it), and stuff like that just confirms it. I remember also reading one thing where some lady actually decided that because Harry and Hermione weren't together, she no longer believed in God. Okey Dokey.

Luckily I arrived late enough in LotR fandom to where the really bizarre shit had already went down, and I ignored the rest. Except when I wanted a laugh, of course.

Oh lord, let's not even start on the Harmonians. That's some scary crap right there. I get being upset when your ship gets trampled by the canon, but dude.

Also, I shouldn't disparage the LoTR fandom. It's got some respectable crazy as well. (Wasn't there someone who made up their own elf language or something?)

BTW, so much love for that icon. *g*
