The Zen of math
True, Zen in general seems like an attempt to, as someone once put it, equate lack of rigor with profundity (one hand clapping?), but at times it feel nice.

Another reason to dislike papers in applied math
The paper I am reading now has alpha as a constant and alpha as a subscript index... IN THE SAME EQUATION! They mean completely different things, too. How am I supposed to keep that straight? It doesn't help that the letter 'a' shows up, as well.

New project
With a two week deadline!
Two weeks to learn all about a new, somewhat complicated algorithm and find out what's wrong with someone else's implementation. No problem, I say.
What's at stake is a large portion of the paper that's going out soon.

Sudoku
I tried Sudoku for the first time today.
I can see why everyone likes it so much. It has that "I don't want to quit until I'm done" quality to it. Still, it's not really difficult, or at least the puzzle I did wasn't. Serious question. I'm excited about the 2006-2007 ballet season, but I'm not as excited as I could be. I prefer ballets with multi-act stories and tragic endings over experimental shows with three different choroegraphers.
But, all is not lost. Sleeping Beauty is playing in Texas this year, though not in Houston.

Village ThaiThe Rice Village has lots of nifty restaurants in it, with Two-Rows probably being the most famous. I've been to Two-Rows dozens of times, so I can attest that it deserves its reputation as a place of fine dining and lots of big screens with sporting events on them ( Read more... )
