The vintage_recipes community is on LJ spotlight right now, and that reminded me of some vintage recipe sites, among them the 1974 Weight Watcher Card site. It's a collection of mostly outdated recipe cards that the site mocks for their kitsch value. Some truly do sound awful, and a few are not at all as bad as the site would make them seem, but the one card ( Read more... ) -

I was looking though a classic sci-fi story, and the main character was introduced as having "gray eyes in a handsome and intelligent face." It struck me what an immediately evocative image it was, and how well it set up the character in very few words.
