the cry of the wild geese

Feb 02, 2009 12:52

the first days of February have brought a much-desired rise in temperature. Sunday and today have been sunny, with highs in the lower forties, and the ice is melting, finally melting! I am resigned to the snow staying in residence, but goodbye, nasty layer of ice on top of the snow. my Chessie has arthritis in her back legs and the ice-plated ( Read more... )

yes, I have much the same feeling about facebook, everyone I knows seem to have more friends than be, I don't get how it works, it feels clichey just like it did in school and at college.

twitter seems to be an exercise in obscure posts that only make sense to those in the know, of which I'm never one!

give me lj any day :)

and I love that poem, thank you for posting it - it's always a joy to read it.

That is *exactly* how I feel when I go to Facebook!! It doesn't make me feel closer to these people at all, quite the opposite, as you said, it makes me feel isolated because I see them interacting with all those other people and not me.

Thanks for sharing the poem - now I shall have to read it over and over.

Facebook reminds me daily that there are some people I'm glad to have left behind. They may be "friends," but they weren't ever really friends.

I've found that Twitter can be a good work tool for things like keeping up with people at conferences and sharing ideas with a group of interested people, but I tend to only tweet librarians.

this poem speaks to a deep place in me. ♥

that is a good point about Twitter! and now I'm turning over the usage of 'tweet' as a verb. *g*

I agree with all of the other comments, and I actually even have an AIM away message that says "facebook always makes me feel inferior". I have to tell myself when I read it that I'm finding my own way, which is isn't necessarily the best way for anyone but me. It also makes me feel somehow second best and not quite anyone's first.

Twitter, and also tumblr (echoindarkness.tumblr.com) I use in a different way, mostly for observations about life that are too small for lj, or for links or quotes I come across. I also tend to get quite bored at work and read twitter as something to do while waiting for calls. And I just discovered Neil Gaiman has a twitter, which is quite fun to follow.

Wild Geese is a poem that got included in a lot of multi-faith services at Wellesley, it was one of Victor Kazanjian's favorites I think. I've always liked it too.

Reading "the soft animal of your body" makes me definitely think that it was one of Victor Kazanjian's favorites.

Oh God, now that you mention it, I think I have heard him recite that poem during some ceremony or other. Okay, I am now a little bit squicked. u.u;;;

I am having to use facebook a bit to keep up with my decidedly non-fannish biological family. I like that I can keep track of them better online, but in general, FB seems too demanding and frenetic and I almost wish they were on LJ instead.

yes - I do find Facebook useful for seeing what my cousins are up to. :)
