the cry of the wild geese

Feb 02, 2009 12:52

the first days of February have brought a much-desired rise in temperature. Sunday and today have been sunny, with highs in the lower forties, and the ice is melting, finally melting! I am resigned to the snow staying in residence, but goodbye, nasty layer of ice on top of the snow. my Chessie has arthritis in her back legs and the ice-plated ( Read more... )

I dislike FB mightily. Never use it, though I have one.

I LOVE Mary Oliver, and thanks for reminding me of this amazing poem of her.

I resisted the urge to go on FB for a long time, until one of my old co-workers signed up an account FOR me. =.=; I check it, more often than I should, but to be honest, it kind of bores me. And also, it's my RL networking tool, so I've got people in my family on there, as well as former co-workers, and even one former English teacher. And I know that sometimes, potential employers will check out their applicants on FB (although I've got my profile under restricted access now), so in general, I feel like it's where I have to project my "outer voice ( ... )

so can people whom you haven't 'added as friend' view your facebook profile? or does restricted access limit what they can see?

There are settings on FB to limit who your profile can be viewed by. I have mine set to "only my friends", but unless you set that, then the whole wide world can view your profile. As of right now, I think they're working on something that'll let you filter people from some "levels" of your profile. For most people, this translates to making sure people in your "work" network can't see your drunken pictures from last Saturday or your college heyday years. I don't know if that got off the ground yet though, and I haven't bothered to keep up with it. My philosophy: don't put embarrassing pictures on the internet EVER.

Still learning my way around on Facebook. Thanks for friending me! It seems fun, though in a somewhat limited way. It certainly could not replace LJ.

Beautiful poem! I'm going to add a line or two in my journal, so I remember them.

I really like Facebook - it serves a completely different function to Livejournal for me. There is a little crossover in people, but not much - Facebook is (almost) all people I know in real life, and it's excellent for keeping up with friends and family you might otherwise loose touch with. There are only a couple of people on my list there that I'm not particularly bothered about staying in touch with, and they could be filtered out if I wanted. Livejournal is much deeper, and full of different people, most of whom I don't know in real life. Completely different for me.
