Let's all go down the Strand... a history walk

Sep 27, 2024 09:56

Yesterday's weather was a complete contrast to our walk last week with intermittent very heavy showers throughout the two-hour walk. This time we started at Temple Station which is right next to the River Thames and walked along and through the back streets around the Strand.  This is looking back at the station from the Embankment Gardens which ( Read more... )

Thank you - I remember eating lunches in the Embankment Gardens many years ago, whilst attending a week long course, or conference, I can't remember which!

I have been inside St Clement Danes many years ago, too, but the rest was all new to me, and fascinating.

You're welcome! I really like the Embankment Gardens in the summer. They are a little oasis in a busy part of London.

I learned that St Clement Danes is not the 'St Clement's' of the nursery rhyme, although it does use the tune sometimes in the bell ringing!

Thank you for the virtual tour. I recognise some of those locations from our many visits to London, but others were new.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. There were some new things I'd not seen before too!

What a lovely walking tour...I was hit by a wave of nostalgia as we knew most of the places from our many trips to London.
And I've also been hit with a yearning to revisit the Courtauld Gallery for the 4th? 5th?time. Best Impressionist collection ever.

Have you been to Dr. Johnson's House?

It was very interesting as there were a couple of things I'd not seen before. The Courtauld Gallery has a lovely Monet Exhibition I'm looking forward to seeing.

Dr Johnson's House is on our list of things to see, and we STILL haven't seen it!

I always like the Embankment Gardens. I’ve been in St Clement Danes on a walking tour of the area too but it was years ago. Thanks for refreshing my memory.

We were on a rather damp walking tour yesterday too but of Chelsea, which was also very interesting. London is such a great place for walks despite the weather.

I always think Embankment Gardens is a little oasis in the summer. It's a lovely place to stop and eat too.

I always learn/see something new on a walking tour. They are so interesting, aren't they!

In the first photo of Twining building (that is unadorned) is that the home of a law office?

No, often a building is called a 'court' because it's near to a courtyard area (which that one is). There are little courtyards all around the back streets of London because of the way new buildings follow the layout of older ones that disappeared.

General offices from what I could see on the entry doorbells.
