A history walk - Bloomsbury

Oct 18, 2024 14:45

Yesterday I went on a guided history walk around the Bloomsbury area. The area doesn't have a defined boundary but is usually considered to be bordered by Tottenham Court Road to the West, Euston Road to the North, Gray's Inn Road to the East and High Holborn/New Oxford Street to the South. At the time of the Doomsday Book (1086), the area was full ( Read more... )

Lovely photos and as always London reminds me of Philadelphia on steroids. I suppose it’s because Philadelphia was established only shortly after London was razed by the Great Fire, so a lot of the architecture is quite similar - especially the Victorian stuff, when both cities were flush with Industrial Revolution cash.

Guy really is amazing he has so much trivia in his head! It will be sad not to be able to go on another set of walks with him.

Bloomsbury is my favourite neighbourhood in London. We stayed there often in one hotel or another. Way back on our first trip to London...so long ago...I had the oddest feeling that I knew the place without ever having been there before, that I knew what was around the next corner. That was when I truly fell in love with London since I'm convinced I lived there in a former life if there is such a thing.
Thank you for all the pictures. It was a nostalgic stroll for me.

You're welcome - I'm glad it brought back some good memories. I like the area, but it was so crowded. I do sometimes miss the immediate time just after the Covid lockdowns eased and London was emptier.

Fascinating - thank you.

Feelings were mixed about how well the façade fits in with the buildings surrounding it...

I have to say my personal opinion is - it doesn't.

And I did not do very well on the bat hunt :(

:)

I didn’t like the RADA façade either.

I found everything except the cricket bat …

A horse hospital! I've never seen that before. That memorial is really stunning.

I knew that there was a building called The Stables in Camden, but I hadn't made the connection that it was also a horse hospital! I learn stuff all the time! The memorial was fabulous - absolutely HUGE too.
