Balthazar sits restlessly on the end of the bed as he watches Castiel stare at himself in the mirror. “Seriously? Come on love, your face hasn’t changed since five minutes ago.”
Castiel shoots him a death glare and goes back to studying his expression. He smiles widely and then leans over the counter to run his tongue over his teeth. He grabs his toothbrush and dots a small amount of toothpaste on it and begins vigorously scrubbing his teeth for the third time that day.
“Castiel, stop, you’re going to make your gums bleed.” Balthazar stands and walks over to him and grabs his wrist, stopping the motion. “What’s gotten into you?”
“I asked Dean to come with me tonight.” Balthazar’s expression changes from concerned to amused.
“Oh?” Balthazar leans back against the bathroom door frame to study Castiel as he picks at his hair, forcing the unruly strands to stay in their place.
“Don’t pull anything like last night or you can walk back to Kansas,” Castiel warns as he grabs a line of floss and goes to work.
“Me? Why would I cause anything,” Castiel flashes him another warning glance and Balthazar sighs and pulls himself up onto the counter. “Look, Cassie, I was just trying to help. You’re head over heels for the guy for almost a year, you fuck, then you wake up and he’s gone. Ten years later you magically cross paths again and I thought maybe if the mystery was lifted it might, you know,” Balthazar stops to motion at Castiel who is still primping in the mirror, “solve some of this.”
“If Dean wanted to tell me, he would.” Balthazar huffs. “It was ten years ago. I’m not hung up on the why anymore.” Balthazar gives him a suspicious look. “I’m not. But like you said, as cliché as this is, the universe is giving me a second chance with him. Maybe we won’t be like we were, but he was my best friend, my only friend, for a long time. I miss that.”
Balthazar nods slowly and hops off the counter, his dress shoes clacking sharply on the tile. “I’m not going to tell you how to live your life. Just be careful. I see the way you look at him. Don’t get hurt.” Castiel nods and follows Balthazar out of the bathroom. “One more thing, Cassie?” Castiel turns, hand on the doorknob and raises an eyebrow. “You promise me, if the opportunity arises, you will shag his brains out.” Castiel feels his entire body flush, “you know, as a little bit of payback.” Balthazar winks and Castiel turns quickly without a word and exits the room. They ride the elevator in silence as Castiel mentally weighs the odds of Balthazar’s suggestion ever happening. Then if it does, if he will actually go through with it. There’s no denying he’s still as attracted to Dean as he was ten years ago, but they live so far apart, he’s a doctor, he barely has time for himself and the only reason he sees Balthazar so much is because they work together. He can’t imagine a long distance romance added on to the top of that. Plus it’s not like either of them would give up their lives for each other. It’s not practical, Dean has his garage and Sam, and Castiel has his patients and research. Whatever happens tonight, Castiel is determined to keep these feelings bottled up afterwards and stored on a shelf, to be looked at as a good memory and nothing more.
They walk out of the hotel and Dean is waiting for them again. Castiel almost falls down the steps at the sight of him. He’s got a well-fitted black single button suit on that hugs his shoulders and accentuates the bow in his legs. Underneath he has on a charcoal grey button-down and slung around his neck is an untied bow tie that’s a soft army green. He left the stubble on his chin, but his hair is parted and gelled in a way that reminds him exactly of the model from Balthazar’s fashion show. His dick twitches in interest as he takes all of Dean in but Castiel quickly supplies images of road kill and the obese gentleman he treated last summer who had a case of shingles. He shudders at the images, but thankfully they worked and he stops in front of Dean and places his hands in his pockets to keep himself from reaching out and grabbing Dean by the lapels.
Balthazar comes up to a stop beside Castiel and whistles low, “Impressive, isn’t he Cassie.”
Dean blushes on the tips of his ears, “Sam helped me pick it out.” He ducks his head slightly.
Castiel coughs around the lump in his throat and manages a “you look very nice, Dean,” before fumbling around him off the curve and slipping into the car. The other two men follow suit and they drive off towards the Hilton.
