I'm at work all weekend. Matt is in New York City. To say the least, I am grumpy.

To keep myself focused on moving forward, I've launched my new history/museums/genealogy/personal research blog at Amblering, an old blog that I've wiped clean and repurposed ( Read more... )

I grew up in Fredericksburg, so we went to Wilderness in elementary school; most of those greatest hits are places I have driven through or been in on a fairly regular basis. :-) When are you making the trip?

Probably similar to growing up outside of Boston - I can do the American Revolution forwards and backwards!

We're looking at the first two weeks in August. We'll start with Gettysburg, then swing down along the coast, cut west again after Charleston, hit Andersonville, go as far west as Vicksburg, then cut up around through Tennessee, then back down into Georgia, then up north through Virginia again. I think it comes out to something like 12 different states and 20 battlefields.

As soon as I have time to breathe I'll make his battle list, which I mostly know, but have to confirm. Luckily his regimental history has been published so it's a fairly easy research project!

Thank you! I have to keep myself from letting it get TOO big. I'm really resisting the urge to start it until the fall, and to start planning these big huge outlines. I think I'm going to take a slightly slower tour through sources and really let them tell me the story first.

Oh, my daughter is BEGGING to do a Civil War pilgrimage. We don't have the time or funds to do it this year, but we're hitting some Missouri battlefields and maybe next year we'll head east. Your trip sounds wonderful ~ can't wait to hear more about it.

And EEEEEEEEEEEEEE! LOVE the research idea! Sooooooo interesting. And I find regional attitudes interesting, too ~ I've noted anecdotal differences in attitude between rural/suburban/urban regions, independent of east/west/midwest differentials. Would be curious to know how that plays out in a wider context.

Matt and I have been planning this trip since before we started dating. I'll definitely be blogging about the planning for it and about the trip as well. We're both starting to get really excited ( ... )
