Something of a long shot, but does anyone have any book or movie recommendations that involve the First World War? I'm doing some work research about it for a program next winter, and I've always wanted to know more about the war. I have a halfway decent layman's knowledge, but that's it ( Read more... )

Hmm, the one that comes to mind is To Serve Them All My Days (book, and show). It's about a guy who had served in the war and was injured and then he becomes a teacher. Sorta post-war, but he talks about it in his classes.

It's good (both the book and the series!) and I recommend it, even if it's no help for your research!

Nice, thank you. :) I don't necessarily need research help atm - program is for next January and it's probably going to be just music - but I've always loved the period and am just craving more info for my own purposes. :)

Passchendaele - a Canadian film, by Paul Gross.

Haven't seen it myself, but it's on my list, and besides, Paul Gross! \0/

May be hard to find, but try Drink to Yesterday by Manning Coles. I read its sequel first and therefore found it unbearably sad because I knew what was going to happen to everyone, but it's good. Intelligence work behind enemy lines.

Quite a lot of Golden Age detective fiction is set immediately after WWI - Agatha Christie's early Tommy and Tuppence stuff for instance.

And there's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction_based_on_World_War_I

Yesss, I've read all of Dorothy Sayers and of course Peter is a WWI veteran, but do you know I've never read any Agatha Christie? I should get on that.

Oh, and poetry - obviously In Flanders Fields, which may not get as wide play in the US as it does here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Flanders_Fields

And (I need to stop this) Dulce et Decorum Est (and other stuff by Wilfred Owen). http://www.warpoetry.co.uk/owen1.html
