18. Favorite antagonist and why!
Tough question, too, because I seldom go far enough in a story to fully develop those as they would deserve to be!
My favourite antagonist at the moment would be Dresca. Although it's not a person, but a group, and I've developed them much more in RPG (Shadow Nexus) than in Our Darker Purpose so far, I quite like what I did with them. They're complete nutjobs, totally wacky, even ridiculous at times... but it's a wackiness that only makes you smile for about thirty seconds, before you realize that they're also frigging vicious and dangerous. The Soul Thief is a pretty good example of what that hive mind of corrupted mages is able to do.
Another antagonist I like (and have alas failed to write much so far, since she appears in The Wall of Silence and that one's been on hold for ages) is Silvane Miris Astren, head of the House of Argenstadt, and Empress of Varsa. She's a ruthless leader with an agenda made of constant wat and annexation of neighbouring states. She makes heavy use of both the Army and the Watchers, with their terror policy and oppressive tactics. Yet at the same time, she also does it because she can't see any other solution, because she believes this will free her people at last. 'A means to an end' rather than just evil for the sake of evil.
