Well, it depends on what you consider survival instincts...
He may be the kind of guy who'd turn to cannibalism if need be, but at the same time...if you were to throw something at him, his natural reflex is to turn Into said thrown object, increasing the rate of getting boinked upon the cranium, and causing loss of consciousness, which in turn allows him to fall backwards into the 20 ft pit layered with spikes, just behind him...
