Until recently, I had 2 housemates without an lj. I now only have one housemate without an lj. He happens to be a foreigner. You should easily be able to deduce who king_luddite is from that.

The privacy thing is the less important of the 2 major reasons to have a friends list. When you have a friends list you have a friends page (yours is at http://www.livejournal.com/users/king_luddite/friends ) where you can read all of their posts. It automatically updates, with the most recent posts at the top. You can also add syndicated feeds of blogs and news sites outside of lj to have them show up there.
