(OOC: If you want to be a part of this away mission, please read the whole post including OOC comments at the end for all information, captains orders, etc.)Kirk stared down at the ice planet on the forward view screen unhappily. He didn't have the best relationships with ice planets, and the idea of going down to this one had him less than pleased ( Read more... )

AWAY MISSION - The Search For Spock dctr_mccoy July 14 2010, 02:19:39 UTC
Bones was laying flat on his face. Something had hit Jim and him, knocked them off their feet and onto the ground with the force of a hurricane wind. Lifting his head, it was blowing so hard he almost couldn't make out the body not five feet away from him.

"Jim!" he called out, crawling on his stomach toward the bump in the snow that he hoped was Jim. His gloved hands reached out and felt Jim's body, and Bones sighed with relief.

Jim froze where he was, staring up at the skeleton. "No." No mention of anything this huge on this planet. It was completely desolate, by all reports. "Nothing..." He swallowed, then called out, "SPOCK!"

He could hear them. First the soft echoes of their footsteps and then a characteristic yell from Jim; as he prodded at them still they felt closer, warmer.

But he didn't want to get up. He was cold and stiff, and his muscles ached. He wanted them to come to him. Spock reached out to grab a small bone off the ground, and weakly lobbed it through the slats of the rib cage. It turned over itself into the open space beyond the skeleton, and then skittered across the stone ground.

They both turned at the noise, and headed as fast as they could for the far side of the cavern. At first Bones' attention focused on the noise at the bones sliding on the floor, but tracking its trajectory his eyes moved backward until-

"Over there!" he called to Jim, as he made his way to Spock's side. He was like ice, cold and barely conscious, Bones noted as he pulled out his medical tricorder and began taking readings of the frozen man on the floor.

"Shit, Spock...!" Jim didn't even know what to do first. Spock, who was normally so pale, looked white with a tinge of orange-yellow. He cupped Spock's face and tilted his head to look down into his eyes. "Spock, fucking talk to me, come on..." What could he do? They had to get him warm.

"Hn." Spock blinked at Jim, feeling the sudden presence of both of them and almost dizzy with it. His hands reached out to grip at the fabric over Jim's arms and pull, eager to have something to curl around that was more soft and squishy than an over-large femur. "Le-sumalik," He muttered, closing his eyes; those small movements took his energy too quickly.

The readings weren't what he wanted to see. Spock's heart was beating dangerously slow, his body temperature far too low, and the unnatural tinge to his skin made Bones think immediately of frostbite. He'd have to be warmed carefully, but quickly.

Bones pulled out his communicator, resting one hand on Spock's chest. "McCoy to Enterprise, emergency beam up, three to Sickbay."

But no one replied.

Jim looked at Bones and the communicator. There was nothing, not even static. They were alone, somewhere underground, in a frozen wasteland. His mind panicked, but only for a moment before he nodded. He pulled off his pack, flexing his hands roughly in his gloves to get them as flexible as he could. "We've got some short-term forms of heat in these packs," he start sharply. "Need to get it set up, get him warm. I'll go back to the entrance and go up once we do and try to get a better contact."

In the back of his mind he could feel their mutual distress at...something. Something that wasn't getting him any warmer right at this instant. Spock tugged again at Jim, but then the pack was there and Jim was moving, so he reached over and tugged at Leonard--perhaps he would be more helpful in bringing some warmth.

They tried to contact the other teams - M'Kriss, Pierce, Sybok - no one was responding to the communication hails, and Bones could see Jim trying to formulate new plans in his head. That left him free to concentrate on Spock, getting his temperature up as quickly as he safely could.

Bones sat up and pulled Spock close to him, settling him between his legs, back to chest. He had some warming packs, yes, and those went straight into Spock's hands, one inside each boot, but body heat- even as little as Bones could provide under his layers of clothing - simple proximity would allow them to share body heat, make the packs last longer if they were stuck down here.

But Spock was still so sluggish. Bones really didn't want to take off his gloves, but he slipped them off, unzipping Spock's outer jacket and feeling underneath, searching for skin. "Fuck," he breathed, really unhappy with how cold the abdomen was, rubbing his hands along the muscles to try and get the blood flowing again. "Talk to me Spock, say something." How 'bout this, can ( ... )

Jim was putting together something he could remember from training during the survival courses. Eventually he reached over, tugged over Bones' pack, and started the same thing. Then last, Spock's.

"Bones, I'm gonna strip down and get in here," he pointed to the strange concoction of silvery material. "Get him in next to me, then do the same. Should keep the cold out, but a tight fit." He met Bones' eyes, a little scared but determined. There wasn't anything they could do with all this bulk between them and their body heat and Spock's skin. "Heat packets'll last longer in here."

Jim let out a breath, then whispered a curse as the first bite of really cold hit him as he undid his jacket, scrambling.

Oh, this was much nicer, leaning his head back against Leonard's shoulder while he felt hands massaging into his abdomen. What an interesting new feeling, too, that Leonard's hands seemed warmer than usual.

What is Jim doing? He asked, one eye cracked open to watch Jim. He will get cold if he continues like this.

A faint rumble sounded from his throat. It made him feel warmer, more comfortable, and the issue of dignity didn't even cross his mind.

Spock was purring. He'd have to remember this later.

He's got one of his hare-brained plans, Bones said fondly, more thankful that Spock was communicating coherently than anything else. Not that he doubted Jim's plan - that silver material, Bones knew about it, had even experienced using it before for medical purposes. Just never thought it would be him inside it, trying to warm up a Vulcan.

You're not gonna like it, but we gotta take this off too, and get you in there with him. Bones said, watching as Jim quickly took his clothes off. It didn't look like there was much room in there.

Jim wriggled into the material with a whine as his whole body protested the cold, shifting it so the third one from Spock's back would cover their heads. "Get him in here. It'll be warmer than in his clothing." He hoped like hell it would be. "Get him here," he pattered along his side, "you on the far side, put him between us."

What. No. He wasn't going to strip down and be more cold and somehow become warmer in some impossible way. Spock shifted back against Leonard, hands pushing weakly against his knees on either side.

"Leonard." Unenthusiastic.

It's okay, we're gonna take care of you. Bones started removing Spock's jacket, quickly undid his pants and finally took off his layers of shirts. Gotta get it all off, Bones told him, reminding him more than anything else as he slid those off as well.

Spock would know that they had to be nude otherwise the sweat would make them even colder later. Within a few seconds, and despite an unhelpful Vulcan not assisting in any way, Bones had him undressed and was scooting him into the bag next to Jim.
