I used to opine that Kansas had a cinematic quality that had never been properly expressed. It's a very lonely, cold, photosynthetic beauty. On hot days, sunflowers and dandelions on the side of Highway 40 speak volumes in my head about the essential solitude of man in nature. The rural spread, the empty plain, and the latent city paint an image of heartache and ennui more saturated than any other setting
