I've checked at least three different dictionaries, including the Oxford English Dictionary (one of the perks of working in a library), and "sewist" is not in any of them. The correct term is "sewer". Yes, it's a homonym for the place where our refuse goes, but just because something sounds bad, and because people are too illiterate to know that the same spelling can have two different pronunciations and meanings, that's no reason to go making up new words that serve the same function! We didn't come up with a new conjunction expressing a contrast between two separate clauses just because the current one sounds like someone's rear end! Grrr...
That's a lot of linguistic rage right there ;o) I completely agree with you, but I think it's a bit like how I feel about "snuck". It's not a word, but people will insist upon using it because it "sound better" and that drives me nuts.
Also, strictly speaking, sewer and sewer are heteronyms not homonyms. But now I'm just being picky...
