i will suggest further that whether or not other people or objects exist is fundamentaly irrelevent. to my own mind (if that even exists), they exist, and since that is the only direct way i have of determining existence, from my point of view they do exist. whether or not they exist from an "objective" viewpoint is indetermenate because there are no objective viewpoints.

I would agree to you. It is irrelevant if other minds exist independently of our since we perceive their existence. That's philosophy. Thie thing I love about solipsism (which is Mel's argument, that there is no proof that anything other than ourselves truly exist) is that a solipsist can never share his beliefs with anyone else since the person he is sharing with only knows their own mind and therefore only has proof of his/her existence. Therefore there can never be more than one solipsist in the universe that are actually right about their beliefs. This is why most philosophers try to disprove solipsism and will not argue for it. Poor Descartes never realised the implications of his statements which now form the basis of the inarguable solipsist perspective.

furthermore, how would one define existence as a non-solipsist?

Its easy. Just say that you believe that other minds (and everything else) exists independently of yourself and your perception of things as a first person experience is just that: perception. It has no proof other than common sense to back it up but it is far less egocentric.
