Marching Band Meeting

Feb 04, 2005 16:17

To start it off, Mr.V invited only the section and squad leaders to the meeting. The kids who are mainly going to be on his side of the whole time switching thing because they have nothing better to do after school anyways (Sports, Jobs, etc.) Out of those were Heather, Dani and I, so it seemed, who didn't want the rehersal time to change to after ( Read more... )

Sorry it's so long... ommpaloompa5 February 4 2005, 13:58:13 UTC
I'm not in MB anymore, but I think V wants to take this band to another level like trying to go to competitions that I know some of us wanted. But he couldn't do it because he wasn't sure where people's hearts were. But if they give up drama or a job in the fall or drama in the fall then he knows that MB is what you've committed to. I mean MB has been Division AA and getting 1's for how long now? And straight 1's this past year. I think V wants more than just that. I'm not saying that those things are remarkable, but there's more that can be reached. I know AB MB can win in the Silverdome or wherever that competition is. haha. Because I know that when some of my cousins saw us during Festival they kept asking why we were competing.

But you should see if the reason why he wants this time change is just so people commit. If that's the only reason, then V needs to calm down. haha.

He never mentioned anything about competitions. Not a thing. We're not worried about that.

The main issue was the whole time change for rehersals durring the week. We can do competitions with those times.

We've been getting 1's in Division AA for years, this I know. Let's continue doing that the same way we've been doing for years! Marching band is about tradition, right?

I also forgot to mention that because of this time change we're losing April Awe and Jordan Ferraro due to their work schedule. They're two of the main people that help us out, but I guess they're just not dedicated enough to band either then are they.

Ahh...you should ask if that's why he's so bent on changing the times.

I understand April and Jordan have jobs because they're trying to support themselves. But then I think Visnaw should try to find someone else perhaps.

I hope the time does change actually, and I agreed with most of the things Visnaw said

and....I stopped reading what you wrote after "The kids who are mainly going to be on his side of the whole time switching thing because they have nothing better to do after school anyways "...haha

lol, I didn't mean it like that. Now that I look at it it's kinda funny. What I meant was they didn't have sports or some important school activity that they were involved with. They just went home. Ya kno?

I totally agree with you.

I am so angry about this.

People are just so selfish.

Well I spend my time with mainly band and a job. This spring though Im taking lessons and might make varsity along with my job.

I think I can safely say I have things to do after school.

I came in sceptical and against the change but I still had no good reasons not to like it.

Visnaw at first didnt have me convinced but later he actually pointed out some good things.

So i left open to the change and thought of some other things we could do.

Then again during the season i dont have soccer but even if there was id definately choose band over soccer.

Maybe im just a big band geek. I love marching band.

oh yeah but the only problems are with April and Jordan. Especially April. I think well be fine being with jordan on fidays but color guard doesnt really have everything written down and in front of them.

And whoever said new people. youre a meany, if April and Jordan were replaced I would be very angry. They cant be replaced cuz they do so much more than any other section person and its not their fault theyre being held back from something they want to do for the good of the band. Nobody else can do it as perfectly as them.

It'd be different if you had to choose over band and soccer. You can't really say what'd you do, I think, because they aren't in the same season.

Yeah, V pointed out some good things...but nothing stood out to me. No GREAT reason to switch the times. Just seems like it would be such a big hassle to me, and other people who play sports and do drama. :-/

I see your side. I see why people are upset on this. I first off, have no strong feelings on either side. But, there are a few things i feel must be said.

1) It is easy to bend this into making it appear like Visnaw was just talking to the kids he thought would agree. But the MB is 200 people big. It would have been ridiculous to hold a meeting with 200 students. Plus, most teachers wouldn't even give any students the chance to speak out. Visnaw also encouraged non-section leaders to talk to him, so their ideas will still be heard.

2) Even following the last system kids still made choices. They chose if they wanted to do both, one, or neither. Also keep in mind, hes not banning you from doing all sports. Marching band spans one season. You still have winter and spring sports. Indeed you may still be faced with a difficult choice, but the sad truth is in life you may need to choose one passion over another.

3) First of all, it is incredibly possible and common for people to get music scholarships. It is just as common for someone ( ... )

i agree completly with taylor. the band is too large for a full meeting, and the petition sounds a bit extreme. Some people are saying that those who favor the change are being selfish, but i think it is the other way. we are looking to take our band to the next level, and no i do not mean competition band. If you know Visnaw at all...he dosnt think band should be competative. i dont like the fact that the athletics is being involved as it is, but the choice is now one to be made. choosing a sport does not make you NOT like band. it just shows that you have different priorities, which is NOT a bad thing. i hold band up higher than most people, so i will work my schedual around it. some people dont have that luxury and i feel for you. If you look at the big picture it is easy to see that the change will benefit in many areas. behavior, attendance, tardiness, peoples general mood, energy, focus, and health are all improved in this change. personaly i am for the new schedual. but i can understand why many people are upset.
