LJ Idol 10: Topic 10: Take a Hike

Even after 30 years gone, I can still hear the raspy drawl of my great grandmother calling me to supper. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS is AMAZING!!! THIS is a truly AMAZING piece of writing. Every single word just works and you brought each word to such vibrant and astonishing life, imbued the entire piece with living memory and it SHINES!!!!

Take a bow!

So many wonderful lines, but this one right in the beginning points to the impeccable poetry and perfection of your chosen metaphor - lest they find themselves hungry for her affections, starving for her approval. WONDERFUL!!!

Thank you so much for this generous praise. The memories I carry of her, though long ago, are the most vivid of my youth... I went searching for pictures to add and could only find a few... I guess I need to get to digitizing! :) Thanks so much again for reading and commenting. I'm glad the emotion came through. :)

What a rich, vivid story, with so many details and memories. You really captured the essence of a feisty, fascinating woman and what she meant to. I almost felt as if I knew her, reading this story.

The food hoarding thing reminds me of my Old Southern Grandma who was born around the same time as yours. When she moved to the nursing home in the mid-90's we found home-canned jars of green beans going back to 1977! I understand it more now because I'm reading a book about the Dust Bowl and there's so much talk about all the food that was destroyed or left to rot in the fields because no one could afford to buy it. If I'd lived through that I'd hoard green beans too.
