Religion: It's all about Preferences

I'll admit, i prefer to be atheist. A) Because, overwhelmingly, it seems to be the only likely idea, and B) because i like to be honest with myself, and the world i see ( Read more... )

Very well put. People always fail to realize that their religion is a preference, and seem to damn those who feel otherwise. I have my own beliefs about God, mainly that He's a lot more forgiving than the Bible makes Him out to be. The most important lesson of any religion should be forgiveness and love...and it's a shame that because some people don't share the same preference, they don't extend those lessons to others not in their preference circle.

Josephus Tacitus. I can't remember the whole story off-hand, but he was mainly a very avid Jew, and wrote extensively about judaism being correct or something along those lines, then randomly in the middle of a section of his writing comes a point by point description of Jesus Christ's most well-known characteristics (as if someone was trying to cover all the main important parts of his story), and an endorsement of his divinity, completely out of character with the guy who supposedly wrote it.

Exactly, but it's very difficult when whole groups of people are indoctrinated as children to believe that those who do not live as they do are going down an "evil" path, and must be "saved", when, again, all it is based on is opinions and preferences.

I am not a Christian and it is not rational or even reasonable to assume that all religions are like Christianity.

As a religious person I find it insulting when atheists characterize religion as "society-retarding superstitions"

Atheism is as much of a preference as any other religion and it would be much nicer if Atheist wouldn't go around insulting other people because of their beliefs.

This i have to answer, i wasn't thinking about the actual peaceful religions, the ones whose source-material DOESN'T encourage xenophobic and genocidal behaviour when i wrote this, so i apologize for that. I do recognize the various other religions that are more spiritual paths than iron-clad dogmas to be followed or be punishedbe when i wrote this, and i apologize, and actually support those religions - Buddhism, wicca, etc ( ... )

I'm Wiccan.

I don't have to stretch my verbal or mental acrobatics to justify anything about it. I don't have to ignore facts, or evidence, i don't have to ignore the natural processes of the observable universe to come to my decision.
