i've been thinking about my life lately, in a big spread out whole-horizon way, a way i never have before, either because i didn't want to or didn't know how. you hitchhike along on other people's love and genius for a while until you find your own ride, i guess. but the past few weeks have left me in this wholly different state, where i want to ( Read more... )

Sounds very cool Linds. Good luck with your GRE, it's a bear, but I'm sure you will do great.

thank you cassie!

one thing i do like about school is that everyone is going through the same sort of thing - the night before papers are due you can run into anyone from your class and kind of share this OH GOD DOESN'T IT SUCK look, so you never feel too alone, and even in the less-than-24 hours since i started telling people about this, so many people have commiserated w/ me about the GRE too! i like it a lot in some twisted way. the girl working at borders yesterday was like "have a great day. GOOD LUCK ON THE GRE."

i don't feel terribly worried about it. i got good prep books and wanna work my ass off for it. i'm weirdly excited. two months!

I totally know what you mean. In college I took this biological modeling class that I was totally lost on along with most of the class. I think the only reason that any of us made it through is because the evening before the homework was due we would all be in the one computer lab on campus that had the program we needed and amongst the dozen or so of us we managed to muddle through.

The GRE is tough, but conquerable. The hardest part for me, and I'm guessing for you too Ms. Creative Writing, was the math section. Like they say, there's nothing on that section of the test that you didn't learn in high school, but HIGH SCHOOL MATHS IS HARD when you haven't had it in five years. Good news is that you know you've learned it once, so it's possible to learn it again.

yesterday, i got a general review book, a techniques book and a workbook just for math. my boss and i just talked about this, actually, and agreed that even if you just review the high school math, you can up your score. LUCKILY I AM PLANNING ON DEVOTING MYSELF TO IT FOR AT LEAST SIX WEEKS.

linds you're going to kill the gre. i did a few points better on the MATH SECTION than the english? wut?

what essays do you have to answer for your app, dr. markel?

Reply

lindseymarkel September 6 2007, 18:08:17 UTC
zomg dr. markel THAT'S ENOUGH.

i think the vocab parts will be harder than they look b/c with math, you can study/memorize formulas and techniques etc but you can't MEMORIZE THE WHOLE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

idk if i have any essays on the general grad school app, but for the creative writing dept i have to write a statement of purpose and everything. BARF. and of course my ~*portfolio of creative work consisting of no more than 20-25 pages of fiction or 15 pages of poetry*~.

sarah can we start a grad school club?

ONLY IF I GET TO BE IN IT, TOO.

lindsey, i think this is fantastic. isn't it great to think about something so big and know what you need to do get there?

the only grad school exam advice i can give you is that, despite whatever i you may have previously thought/done/believed, studying (way more than you ever thought possible) is COOL.

Yay for Creating Writing MFA's! I can't wait to get this stupid BA under my belt which is taking forever and ever amen so I can get cracking on my MFA. University of Houston has one of the top rated MFA for Creative Writing, which is nice. But I have been peeking at University of Arkansas because Ellen Gilchrist is on the staff lol. And there's always Iowa...

Linds I HAVE NO IDEA. Seriously. It's really tough right now because it's just taking SO SO LONG. Switching my major was probably both the best thing I ever did and the worst thing I ever did. I mean, I'm doing what I love but GEEZ IT'S TAKING SO LONG. But I am determined to just knock it all out, so there is a chance I'll be done by next summer. GOD I HOPE SO. And if I am, we can totally be bunkmates!!!

i've already checked TWICE to see when they're announcing app deadlines for next summer and they haven't yet. like, they're still SWEEPING UP from the summer workshops for this year and already i'm like HELLO? HELLO? CAN I COME IN? ADMISSIONS PLZ!

i loved monmouth so much but the faculty was so small (not a bad thing normally, just in this case) and the woman who taught creative writing was this HORRIBLE TALENTLESS WITCH of a human. so my advisor took me under his wing and met with me regularly and we'd go over stuff i'd written. and we had great classes. but MAN i'm excited to actually STUDY writing, like... OFFICIALLY.
