Never ask if it's possible for Amanda Palmer to fail more

Mar 25, 2010 21:45

sparkymonster lays down the facts on Amanda's latest fail. Between this and the response to criticism of Evelyn/Evelyn? No limits on the fail.

Some of the pictures at Sparkymonsters post are potentially triggering images of racist violence. Be warned.

AFP's quote actually left my mouth hanging open. It takes a lot to shock me these days. I'm at a loss of words.

And it's even more galling that Gaga can generate all kinds of controversy out there over nothing and create legions of people out there who love or hate her (yet both camps are still obsessed with her).

All the while that dirtbag Amanda Palmer can have a field day with ablism and telling people it's hipster-irony to give money to the Klan and the only people who will notice and raise a fuss are people in a few pockets on the internet who notice and give a shit about oppression and equality.

We live in a very fucked-up world.

Yeah, ngl, I'm not at all enthralled with Gaga's new video.

But this is not in the least an appropriate response. Hipster racism is just regular racism.

She's willing to fuck up and pretend it's okay.

Oh god, what the fuck is her problem?

Thanks for the warning about the pictures. I looked anyway but yeah, the reality of Naziism is ... sobering.

Yeah, although the KKK predates Naziism by several decades. 1865 by southern Civil War veterans, specifically.

Didn't realise the organisation went back that far. How depressing :-(

It was a direct backlash to the end of slavery in the US.

I've been hearing about this from a die-hard Amanda Palmer fan who is quick to her defense. Apparently it's just 'black humour' (more poor wording) and nobody has the stomach for it.

No wonder she's apologetic. With some fans you can do no wrong, and after a while that will only validate your stupid.

I would say no one has the stomach for it because it's horrible and in poor taste. But yeah, fans can sometimes be astoundingly uncritical.

Also, I like Meloukhia's post about hipster racism.

I think that the first time I'd seen an actual lynching photo was in my US History text from college. That, along with reading The Autobiography of Frederick Douglass for that class went a long way toward removing the white suburban blinders I'd been raised with. It brought the horrors of the violent racism of the US home to me. But it was still a couple of years until I realized that it wasn't just a thing of the past. Even after the Rodney King case I thought that it wasn't in the here and now. I don't remember exactly when I fully realized and understood the subtle racism of the present. It may have been when I watched "Do The Right Thing" for my multi-cultural Ed class. Or possibly even "Bob Roberts". But it was sometime around 1993 or 1994. It's kind of embarrassing that it took that long.
