I'm awaiting post from Amazon with bated breath! I bought Tian Zhuangzhuang's remake of Spring in a Small Town, which was an impulse buy, as well as the one I really wanted, Jia Zhangke's Platform 站台. I'm going crazy about him again, and it seems his latest film The World 世界 isn't quite available on DVD yet ( Read more... )

Could one of you Chinese speakers put me right on this? I've met a guy from Hong Kong whose Mandarin isn't fluent but he likes practising it on me with my much worse Mandarin, and he calls me 您. Since we're both kind of 19 or 20 and I call him 你, what's going on? It reminds me of a party in Germany where a guy chatted to me sober as "du", but ( Read more... )

Another story from my daily life which I'll delete soon: My mother and I went over to County Waterford today because we both had paintings to pick up from a giftshop-stroke-gallery there. The gallery is in a perfect fishing village called Ardmore, on the south coast.

Not that any of you are interested, but I've been thinking about Ba Jin's "Family" and Lao She's "The Two Mas", two novels written at almost exactly the same time (c. 1930), with "Family" set in Chengdu and "Er Ma" in London.
