At my day job, I research alternate algorithms to compute Google PageRank. I've become quite acquainted with the properties of the problem. So I decided I would put my knowledge to misuse and compute PageRank over the LiveJournal friends graph ( Read more... )

Interestingly, you got less than half of total LJ accounts in your dataset.

I don't think this would collect data for communities, which the count on the LJ front page includes.

Okay... so? I have serious doubts as to whether 5+ million accounts are communities, so are you implying that his dataset cuts off because he can't go through communities?

Communities wouldn't have a pagerank of their own anyway, they share it with all the other communities (unless paid coms get their own subdomain? I've lost track).

Also, I see no Russian users (or other non-anglophone) at a quick scan, so that would account for a solid chunk.

It's not everyone, but it's a good proportion. Perhaps if he ran it again but first friended theferret and a few others so they'd get caught by the algorithm?

Cool trick, judging PR just by LJ rather than all links. Really must get around to checking how things have panneed out since the switchover, the sandbox should be long gone by now.
