Slow checkouts

Feb 21, 2013 15:20

Over the last couple years I've noticed that stores have fewer and fewer cashiers and therefore it takes longer and longer to check out.  At some stores it's gotten to the point that I avoid that store whenever possible or have someone else wait in line for me when I walk in the store to speed up checkout.  Walmart is one store I avoid almost ( Read more... )

I know what you mean! It seems like a LOT of places are trying to cut down on the number of employees they have to pay though. I was at a TGI Fridays a couple weeks ago, one I'd never been to, and they were testing out this wireless computer order thing. It's a little thing, like a tablet, that sits on your table and you can use it to punch in your order and request refills for your drinks without the waitstaff. You can even pay with your credit card with a card reader on it. It was kind of handy, in that I hate flagging someone down for drinks when they are always trying to juggle so many tables at once, but at that same time... wonder how many waiters/waitresses will be out of work?

For grocery shopping I go to Aldi and they have had bare-bones cashiers forever. I just make sure when I go I don't have anywhere to be after because you are guaranteed to wait in line. The prices are worth it to me, but it can be frustrating at times too.

Aldi is a pain cause you have to rent the cart and there's no bags. If I go in to get something I always see something else too and before I know it i'm juggling.

Haha! I totally know what you mean. I always keep a quarter in one pocket in my purse separate so I don't spend it accidentally and get a cart even I I only plan on getting one thing because I never walk out with just one thing. I guess if you don't carry a purse it could be tough though lol.

Going to check out bottom dollar food now that there is one nearby. Wondering if their prices are comparable. If they have good prices and better checkouts I will be a convert!

I haven't noticed that too much, but I usually shop on weekday nights when shopper traffic is light.

The Walmart in Rockaway has a few self-checkout lanes now. The Quick-Chek in Hopatcong has also installed self-checkout lanes.

Hate to see people replaced with machines but I guess that's the history of technological improvement. I'm sure the furriers were pretty upset with cars too.

How do you think it feels from the other side, Me working in a cvs/pharmacy, where its me and the manager in the morning. Me being the photo lab supervisor but also acting as the only cashier with manager back up. It's frustrating from my end as well. I just want to throw my hands up and walk out with you!

I do understand the understaffing is tough on the employees as well. What does happen is that over time a store the chronically understaffs is going to loose business.

What's also annoying is now they judge cashiers harshly on 'wait time' in almost all the surveys that pop up on receipts. So because they have less cashiers doing more people, they then get bad scores and get fired or harassed at the very least by their managers. America is terrible.

We had that problem at my previous job. It's all about the dollars sadly. :/ we also had a call center handling some calls for us and even though we had nothing to do with them and could not control them when people complained about the call center on the surveys it affected our score. Wtf.
