The ninth is a spectacular piece. I am captivated by the first and fourth movements, the fourth especially. Each is epic in its own right; it is absolutely amazing that one composer put both in the same symphony.

Hans Vonk's final performance with St. Louis, I believe, was Mahler IV. He was physically unable to conduct Five, which I think was the plan. It was really a transformative performance. I believe he passed a year or two later.

My favorite recording of any piece is the Bernstein Mahler Nine with Berlin on DG in what, 1992?. It's expensive. It's live. Spend the money.

The recording, I think, was taken in 1979. Released in 1992.

I regret my error borne of ignorance.

Live ALWAYS better than a recording, I think. I was reading the reviews of this recording on Amazon and some complain about the non-music related noise or small errors. I find that those mistakes bring out the humanity in our performances. We are imperfect artists trying to build someone else's vision. That we make mistakes, actual, stylistic, etc., make music organic; there is no perfect performance and even a benchmark performance can never be experienced in the same way a benchmark painting or novel can.

I hate it when people praise performances for audio quality or technical superiority. That's not what music, and especially classical music, is for.

I stumbled upon the word 'halation' during one of the technical optics section of Infinite Jest. It has a specific meaning, but also just kind of jumped out at me. It seems like we can take the term and snake through the book seeing how different refractions are portrayed. Happy Mahlering,

I have a recording of Mahler 9 that is Claudio Abbado conducting Berlin live. It is a phenomenal performance. That's also the recording of Mahler 7 I have, Abbado live with Berlin. Both are spectacular.

My favorite recording is Cleveland with Dohnanyi. It's expensive, but it's amazing

I like seeing a picture of Calvin in underpants juxtaposed against the word "kulturkam[p?]f."

That's core.

What year is the Cleveland? They've always had great winds, but I think the greatest Mahler playing comes from those old, old string sections. They slide with less precision but more color. . .

I'm pretty sure it's 97. I'm a brass player and the brass and winds in thaty orchestra are great, but the strings are the best. Unfortunatly, they aren't always recorded terribly well. its a great recording.

ya i thought it was funny yo use the english (mis)spelling, that's why there's no p. you're the 1st person to comment on the intentional mixing of calvin and kulturkampf.
