college post #320948093857.
so after being accepted to both nyu & drexel, i've reached a bit of a dilemma. oh, which should i go to? so here's the breakdown of it all.

nyupros: it's freaking nyu. i'd be taking classes at stern. it's in the music business capital of the world. i think i'd do better socially there. more my type of people. ( Read more... )

I vote for NYU.
1) It's really important to have people that you can get along with
2) NYU is better for business (As you said) and I daresay won't be lacking in the production area either (well, at least I doubt it's going to not have any at all).
3) You can have a new life saving later, carpe diem, my friend
4) Listen to Frances :-D

The problem with asking people for advice is you're not trying to decide between two schools you like equally, where people could give pros and cons for either side. You already know the pros and cons, and that you want to go to NYU. The only thing that's making it difficult to say yes right away is the money issue. So it all hangs on if you can ultimately afford it, and are willing to be in debt forever (I'm only assuming based on what you said, maybe you wouldn't actually be in debt forever). Deciding whether or not it's worth it is a very personal choice, just like choosing the direction for your future, and while people can, like I said, just give you the pros and cons of each school, the key factor is not something anyone can give advice on. It's a matter of how much you want it, but also a matter of being realistic. So I guess it's about finding the happy medium between those two.

i thought i was being realistic when i said i was going to get rejected. oh well. i hope i won't be in debt for the next million years, but there's no way of telling. there's also no way of telling what kind of job i'll have by the time i graduate. *sigh*

you know... i think what you need to do is somehow find statistics of the success of people in the music industry after graduating both schools. i really think that's what's important. if it weren't for the money i would definitely say NYU. it's a better school. on the other hand, drexel seems to offer a few things that NYU doesn't. what i don't know, though, is where these coops and other things drexel has really give you an edge in the industry. so like i said, i think your best bet is to find out what graduates of these programs actually end up doing after they leave college. unless, i'm missing something, or drexel is a hidden gem, i'd probably be willing to bet that NYU is a better choice. as for money, i guess this depends on what i just said. if you're going to earn money after you graduate then the education now is worth it. music industry seems like a very difficult career to make it in just because it depends so much on connections and what not. if nyu is a better school, you will most likely be more successful, and thus ( ... )

it's hard to find statistics since both are relatively new programs. nyu has a more impressive list of where people work after graduation, but drexel has some of the same places. at drexel i'd get two (maybe three) co-ops. at nyu i'd get 3 internships. either way i get work experience, it's just that since co-ops are full-time jobs, you get paid.

ok so i figured that if everyone else was giving opinions, i can give mine.
one thing that really stuck out is that everytime you talk about drexel you say that you fall in love with it more and more each time you visit. that's defintily not something to be forgotten. when it comes down to it, chances are you'll have fun and be successful at both places. try not to worry so much, in the end, it'll all work out. and you could always transfer if you had to. idk, good luck and do what feels right. forget everyone else and forget the money, do what will make you happiest.

i think i only said i fall in love with it more each time i visit because i was set on getting rejected from nyu. i think. maybe i do really like it. i don't know. but also, i can't transfer. my major's pretty selective at both schools. drexel doesn't accept transfers at all. the professor at nyu said that last year she had 12 people apply as transfers, but she only accepted 2. i'm sure i'll be succesful at both places, i just get better vibes from nyu. i wish my damn financial aid stuff would get here already so that i could appeal it and ask them for more money. and thanks for wishing me good luck.

Hey, I found your journal from that NYU community...yeah, anyway, several NYU kids have told me that they've had an easy time managing an NYU-linked job to take care of tuition and studying. If you go to NYU we can talk about how awesome Jenny Lewis and indie music are. You can also tell NYU some other school is offering you a good scholarship to try to get money...I've never heard if you need proof for that though, but yeah...I added you.
