I am so glad to be on the other side of my quote-unquote jury service. It ended up being to serve on a trial jury but for a civil trial- essentially a lawsuit, for someone hurt in a motor vehicle accident. According to LJ, I've been on this site longer than Frodo has been waiting for Gandalf to return from his travels researching Ring-lore. My comparison, not theirs. I don't think I fully realized what a long time that was when I first read the book.

I finally got my jury summons and saw what they're paying jurors these days in my state. Just $40 a day, and no extra allowance for parking or lunch or anything like that- that just works to $10,400 a year if you earned that every day for a normal work week. I think my work will still pay me, though they're not legally required to as I read it, and ( Read more... ) -

Stephen Colbert let his inner Tolkien geek out on his show last night. He actually has a point about how fascism has no place in the fanbase, but even if he didn't, it's always fun to see him nerd out.

Today I got not one but two vaccinations all by myself, even when it was the absolute last thing I wanted to do and even because I knew it would make me feel yucky. I'm beginning to think that being adult is basically really not wanting to do a whole lot of things but then doing them anyway.
What a gip. Still: mischief managed.

City dogs are something else. I was walking back from seeing Spider-Man and happened across three really well behaved pups. One was clearly tempted but stayed away from the giant bags of garbage left out overnight for the sanitation workers to pick up. I may be old and stodgy and over-serious at times, but I'll always try to be young at heart, if by young we mean a sense of humor laughing inappropriately at the oddest of things. This video crossed my Tumblr dashboard not too long ago, and it deserves to be shared. I really respect their taking a fairly obscure '70s song use of "cat" so literally, and then giving it that fun "I Can Has Cheezburger?" energy.
