Yes, this is a follow-up to
my previous post, but it gets into other things that aren't "Criminal Minds", so technically it's not a second "sequel" (there may or may not be one at the end of this TV season, no promises either way) thus I didn't title it as such. Yes, this also has to do with why I was so upset as mentioned on That Other Site. I know it's stupid, this is yet another negative post, it's probably going to get very long, and I may have more difficulty than usual keeping my language in check, but please, hear me out. And no "for Pete's sake it's just a show" or anything else along those lines- like I haven't been telling myself that, and it's actually not so much about the show itself (you'll see what I mean).
Well, they did indeed kill off Reid's Weirdo Wonder Girlfriend. I think
I'll let Jo Dee Messina speak on my behalf as far as that goes. I mean, that whole thing was stupid and contrived from the start, and again that was all they wanted the Reid character back for (remember, Matthew Gubler almost didn't renew his contract, Reid's role had diminished very badly, and the only reason he wasn't written out in season six- which they really seemed to be trying to do- was they realized he still had a contract at the time or wanted to keep him as a director)? (Again, I reiterate that I don't actually have any pairing I'm so passionate about that Reid/Weirdo Wonder Girlfriend would interfere with, and this includes me knowing damn well Reid is a fictional character thus wouldn't hook up with me ever, so that old excuse is still out the window.) Her death is far from the worst thing about this "relationship" (I'm sorry, talking to someone over payphones on Sundays without meeting in person at all over six, ten, how ever many months is not a relationship). How about that she was practically a female clone of Reid, thus coming off as, at best, a too-perfect
Mary Sue for him to hook up with? I say "at best" because this chick did come off as creepy to many, some even going so far as to speculate that she could be the season-long villain the BAU is dealing with this season. And again, that it was a phone-only relationship. Not to mention that had she survived she could've revealed herself to be at best controlling, abusive, or whatnot and at worst a serial killer at any time after she and Reid did actually meet face-to-face. So what's the problem? Well, try saying all that on any "Criminal Minds" forums or anywhere near any CM, let alone Reid, fans. Ever since shortly before my last entry, when the possibility of Weirdo Wonder Girlfriend dying came up, all of a sudden even those who disapproved of the "relationship" in any way for any reason were all for it. And then when she did die, there was far more mourning, complaining, sympathy, etc. from the fans than when Hotch lost the love of his life (yes, there were lingering feelings between Hotch and Haley even after they separated) to a serial killer he/his team had been pursuing. It should also be noted that many of these people would love/would have loved nothing more than to see the backs of Will (though despite it looking like they'd get their wish early in season seven, the finale proved otherwise) and Kevin (there they did get their wish, unfortunately)- and there are still very few that are glad Hotch's Mary Sue girlfriend is all but completely gone. Also, nobody seems to really care about the Jeanne Tripplehorn character's unseen husband or whatever. And, again, there were even some- nay, a lot of- people who were against Reid/Weirdo Wonder Girlfriend, people who would likely have complained had the relationship gone "well" (maybe not necessarily going so far as them getting married and/or having children, but still). But now gods help you if you don't ship Reid/Weirdo Wonder Girlfriend and never did, whether it was due to a conflicting
OTP involving Reid or not!
Unfortunately, this also reopened some old wounds. In 2007, there was a time I didn't want to look at or think about anything related to weddings, pregnancy, or babies (made going to malls, where bridal shops, baby stores, and maternity stores are inevitable, fun) because that pairing had ended up with the characters involved getting married and having a baby- the pregnancy just barely fitting within the timeframe of the last book and the ("off-screen") wedding having occurred mere weeks of book-time after the pairing just suddenly popped up out of nowhere in the previous book and was presented as far from functional or stable. And nothing was really there to convince me that the relationship was all that wonderful or that the child was all that awesome (or that the child's existence was in any way justified except for the shippers to gloat). But like with the CM fandom situation, everyone, even many who had been against the pairing when it was first introduced (and not necessarily due to support of any conflicting ones)- well, suddenly the fact that both characters involved had died was the worst thing about it (and their "wonder child" survived to become probably the most overrated character in all literature). Never mind the age difference, the fact that the relationship was out of nowhere and ill-developed, the fact that a once-awesome character was reduced to throwing herself at a guy who wasn't interested and being completely emo and useless just so she could give birth to a character that didn't really need to exist, the fact that another once-awesome character became an extreme doormat, that said doormat was later seen being a bit too happy and excited over the birth of the child he didn't seem to want earlier (and really the last thing he needed was a child to support), and that both of the unfortunate parents left their pointless by-product and basically marched into battle knowing odds were against either of them returning alive. Not to mention the fact that neither of them got to really demonstrate or use what they clearly had/could have brought to the table once Rowling had decided to "breed" them. (Oh yes, person who's about to bring up my love of a different pairing with a large age gap and involving the female crushing on the male,
did I or did I not point out that those are the only things the two pairings have in common?) One cannot be a fan of Remus or Tonks without supporting the pairing, or at least somewhat supporting it for the sake of that worthless child. Nor can one be in the "Harry Potter" fandom without at least having a soft spot for that child- yes, without doing anything and having no personality or characterization to speak of, that kid has somehow become the fandom's sacred cow, hence the "probably the most overrated character in all literature". Express any negative opinions on the pairing or its by-product, you're disrespecting Remus (or Tonks). Note my use of the present tense- unfortunately, while this may have died down a bit, it hasn't gone away. Unlike the CM situation, I did in fact express my dissenting opinion (not only on this pairing and its over-worshipped by-product but also on other pointless yet worshipped additions to the cast and the last book in general) somewhere other than here on at least a couple occasions. It... got me
into some trouble, and of course memories of said trouble boiled to the surface and certainly did not help matters. I also ran into some... issues... during my time in the "King of Fighters" fandom, but I choose not to speak of them.
As for the CM situation, well, I didn't bother with a rare de-lurking on the one forum where I actually have an account (the other, the IMDB one, I can only lurk because they ask for too much information to set up an account there to post) or any of the other CM groups (like on deviantArt or here on LJ) I have access to, but by golly did those apparent very few who more or less shared my opinion get verbally creamed! And oh my gods, the way people defended that paring/that practically non-existent "love interest"! Made me feel ashamed to be a CM fan, ashamed to be a Reid fan, like I shouldn't be either of those. That I should scrap
the DC series altogether (though I tried to at least temporarily turn my focus on that to the sub-series that takes place in 1998-1999- the Trio's freshman year of college- where no CM characters appear but it does mark the first appearance of a certain canon character from yet another series), perhaps sell my Reid doll, never wear my "Team Reid" t-shirt or BAU hoodie again, try to find some other LJ mood theme (you may have noticed my mood icons are all Reid, it's
specifically this mood theme; I had switched from my old mood theme in part because I prefer having the same character express whatever moods as opposed to various scenes from a movie or series possibly involving characters I don't even like for certain moods)- you get the point.
What it all basically comes down to is here is yet another fandom that has betrayed me. The very people I should be bonding with are making me feel bad about myself. It's like I've been ostracized. I just feel so alone, so empty.
And that is why I was in such a deep blue funk. It's diminished a fair amount, but it hasn't completely gone away yet. Though if anything, I can assure you my next post will be positive- it's one I've been meaning to write a while ago.
P.S.: I have in fact recovered enough to want to keep my Reid doll. So, sorry, not for sale.
